Ready to Rule: The Real Heiress Strikes Back novel Chapter 40

Lucinda listened to Connor’s deep, magnetic voice, her heart racing so fast she thought it might leap right out of her chest. Her cheeks flushed, and she couldn’t do a thing to stop it. Nobody knew just how much she liked Connor. Even before she really understood what love was, she knew he was her fiancé, the man she was supposed to marry one day.

The door opened and Aiden stepped in. Before he could get a single word out, Lucinda was already rushing forward. “Connor!”

Connor’s face had been calm, almost indifferent, but the second Lucinda appeared, his eyebrows drew together and an icy tension filled the room. He’d been getting messages from her since five o’clock that evening. If it weren’t for the Norwood family, he would have blocked her ages ago. And now, here she was.

His gaze, cold and sharp, landed on Aiden, who immediately felt the pressure.

“Boss, Miss Lucinda heard you were hurt and just wanted to check on you,” Aiden said, trying to ease the tension.

Lucinda could tell Connor wasn’t happy. The heavy atmosphere made it hard to breathe, but she couldn’t help the way she felt about him. She loved how broody he was, how distant and proud. He was handsome, strong, and in her eyes, a true hero.

“Connor, don’t blame Aiden. I begged him to bring me up here. I was just worried about your injury, so I wanted to see you,” she said quickly.

“I’m fine,” Connor answered, his voice flat and cold. He looked at Aiden. “Walk Miss Lucinda out.”

Lucinda’s heart dropped. She hadn’t expected him to send her away so quickly. “Connor, I only came to bring you some soup. I made it myself. If you just have a little, I’ll go.”

Grace hurried over with the thermos in her hands, her manner respectful. “Connor, Miss Lucinda spent two hours in the kitchen making this soup for you…”

“I’m not hungry,” Connor cut her off, clearly annoyed.

Connor fixed Aiden with a glare, his eyes cold as ice. “If you ever take it upon yourself to make decisions like this again, you won’t have to stay in the Capital. Three years in the mountains should give you plenty of time to think things over.”

Aiden nodded so fast it was almost comical. “Yes, boss.”

He’d definitely remember this.

Connor’s tone turned sharp. “So what exactly are those four top informants doing? They’ve been at it all day and still haven’t figured out her real identity?”

Aiden felt his face heat up with embarrassment. Those four informants were supposed to be legends on the dark web. For the right price, they could dig up dirt on anyone, even presidents. But somehow, after a whole day, they still hadn’t found out who ‘Chief Lydia’ really was.
