Anyone who didn’t know any better might think she was modeling for a jewelry store.
“If you took the wrong turn, then just leave. Don’t stand around getting in the way,” Rose said, her voice full of pride.
The two receptionists puffed up, their tone getting even sharper. “Hey, did you hear her? She’s talking to you. Move along and stop being an eyesore to our madam.”
With high heels clicking against the floor, the wealthy lady finally stopped in front of them. She took off her sunglasses and stared at Lydia, looking a little surprised for a moment. Something about this girl looked familiar, but she was sure they’d never met.
She didn’t bother hiding her annoyance. “Are you lost? You don’t belong here.”
Lydia just smiled, unbothered. “And you do?”
Rose clearly didn’t expect Lydia to talk back. Her expression twisted into something ugly. “Do you even know who I am? I’m the wife of Greenward Power’s boss. I can come and go as I please. Who do you think you are, daring to question me? Leave right now, or I’ll have security throw you out.”
“Exactly. Mrs. Ragain can come whenever she wants. Who do you think you are, telling her what to do? Be smart, get lost. If you wait for security, you’ll only embarrass yourself,” one of the receptionists chimed in, practically wagging her tail behind Rose.
Lydia let out a cold laugh and looked Rose up and down. “Funny. From what I heard, there’s only a vice president running things here right now. Whose wife did you say you are?”
Rose wasn’t expecting this at all. How did this girl know so much about the company’s management? She hesitated for a second, then lifted her chin and sniffed. “What would you know? My husband may be called the vice president, but he’s been in charge since day one. He runs everything here. Whatever happens, big or small, he calls the shots.”
She shot Lydia a look, her pride practically sparkling, like a peacock showing off its feathers.
The phone rang twice before someone answered. “Hello, who’s this?”
Lydia kept her tone calm. “Lydia.”
There was a short pause, then the person on the other end sounded instantly respectful. “Ms. Norwood! I’m so sorry, I didn’t realize it was you. Are you at the office already?”
Lydia nodded. “Yes, I’m at the front desk.”
“I’ll be right down to meet you.”
