“It took you all half a year to realize Lena was acting. But I saw through it from day one.”

I smiled. “That’s the difference between being raised rich and being raised poor. You guys are too naive.”

After dinner, Bernard offered to drive me back to school.

On the way, he asked, “Are you really not planning to come home?”

“No, I’m not.”

“Mom and Dad really miss you.”

“What they miss is an obedient daughter, not me.‘

“What you all want is someone to take Lena’s place.

What I want is a real family.

We want different things, so we’re destined to never be together.”

The car stopped at the school gate.

Before I got out, he called after me, “Jessica, whether you admit it or not, you’re still my sister.”

I turned back. “Biologically, that’s true.”

“Not just biologically,” he said seriously, “you’re truly my sister.”

I smiled, said nothing, and turned to enter the school.

Grandma was ill.

I rushed back to my hometown overnight. Grandma was lying in the hospital, looking very thin.

“Lung cancer, late stage,” the doctor said.

It felt like my world was collapsing.

“Grandma…” I held her hand, unable to stop my tears.

“Silly child, why are you crying?” She patted my head. “Everyone has to face this day.”

“No, Grandma will get better. I have money now, we’ll go to the best hospital and find the best doctors!”

“Grandma has lived long enough.”

“Listen to Grandma,” she took a breath.
