Chapter 18
On All Souls‘ Day, I went to visit my grandmother’s grave.
My parents and brother accompanied me.
In front of the grave, Rhonda placed a bouquet of flowers and said earnestly, “Ma’am, thank you for raising Jessie. We will take good care of her.”
Nolan also bowed deeply.
Bernard was even more direct; he knelt down and bowed three times.
“I am Jessie’s brother. I didn’t protect her well before, but I will from now on.”
My eyes grew moist.
Grandma, did you see that?
They really are trying their best.
Maybe. I should try too.
On the way back, I sat next to Bernard.
“Bernie.” I called him.
“Hmm?”
“Thank you.”
“Thank me for what?”
“Thank you all for not giving up on me.”
He was stunned for a moment, then smiled and said, “Silly girl, we’re family.”
Family,
I savored those two words for a long time.
Maybe, it’s time to let go.

Five years later.
I graduated from graduate school, and at the same time, my fifth book reached the top of the
bestseller list.
On the day of the graduation ceremony, my parents and brother all came.
Nolan’s leg had fully recovered, and he looked energetic and spirited.
Rhonda hugged me and cried, “My Jessie has made us so proud.”
Bernard boasted everywhere, “Look, that’s my sister!”
“Jessie,” Rhonda raised her glass, “Mom has something to say.”
“Go ahead.”
“I’m sorry,” she said with tears in her eyes, “and thank
you, thank you for giving us a chance.”
I clinked my glass with hers and said, “Mom, what’s past is past.”
That word “Mom” came out so naturally.
She was stunned for a few seconds, then cried even harder.
Nolan’s eyes turned red as well.
Bernard teased, “Call me affectionately too!”
“Bernie.”
“Say it again!”
“Bernie.”
“Haha, that’s great!”
