Ariana understood exactly what Kiara was thinking and why she had spoken up. Kiara had always been the type to swallow her grievances in silence.
The reason she was breaking her usual restraint now was all because of Ariana.
Deep down, Ariana had always known—ever since she brought Kiara back to the White family, the girl had truly come to see her as an elder sister.
It was hard to describe the feeling, but warmth was definitely part of it.
Still, Ariana didn’t want Kiara getting involved.
She didn’t want her mother to cause trouble for the girl, so after a brief silence, she calmly recounted what had happened that day. Then she added, "The child is mine. Even Lambert has no right to tell me to get rid of it. I think you understand what I mean, Dad."
Gilbert’s face darkened.
He stared at his daughter, visibly uncomfortable.
He never would’ve imagined such a thing happening while he was away on business—Georgia had actually pressured their daughter into aborting the baby and divorcing Lambert?
Had she lost her mind?!
Forget the alliance between their families—Ariana already had three children and another on the way. Divorce was out of the question. What would happen to the kids? More importantly… the couple was perfectly happy together. What kind of madness was it to push for divorce?
Completely baffled, Gilbert could only listen as Ariana coolly shared her suspicions. "Lambert has an ex—someone who looks like me. She got divorced and came back to the country. She’s been trying to break us up, but I haven’t taken the bait. Last time, after my car accident, Mom visited me and ran into her. You know how easily influenced she is—she probably listened to Irene’s nonsense and started believing I was the other woman."
Though Ariana spoke in a detached tone, Gilbert was furious.
He couldn’t hold back a curse. "Bullshit!" Lambert and Ariana were already married. If anyone was the interloper, it was that woman.
Had Georgia lost all sense?
Can't you see what that woman is scheming? And she actually tried to persuade Ariana to get a divorce?
Gilbert was so furious he almost laughed.
His hands trembled slightly from the intensity of his emotions. Ariana caught sight of his reaction, and a flicker of concern crossed her mind—she regretted her earlier tone. Fortunately, Kiara was quick-witted. Seeing her uncle shaking with anger, she immediately helped him sit down, her voice laced with worry. "Uncle, let me call the doctor to check on you."
Gilbert shook his head. "No need..."
He was just momentarily overwhelmed by rage.
Still, Kiara insisted it was better to be safe and dashed out to fetch the doctor. Gilbert sighed, but didn’t stop her—there was no point. Instead, he turned to his daughter, his voice firm yet gentle. "I’ll talk to your mother and find out what’s going on. Don’t worry about things at home. You know how she is—after all these years under my protection, she’s still too trusting, too easily swayed by others. Ari, from now on, don’t bother with her. Next time, I won’t even let her come. As for the White family, rest assured—your father will always have your back."
His wife’s actions baffled him. Even with Ariana’s explanation, it still seemed unfathomable.
Yes, he had shielded her all these years, leaving her too soft-hearted, too naive.
Noticing the dejected look on Kiara’s face, Ariana reached out and gently ruffled her hair. "It’s not your fault. If anything, I should be thanking you—for standing up for me last time."
Kiara’s cheeks instantly flushed pink, her earlier gloom vanishing in an instant.
Embarrassed, she stammered, "N-no… it was nothing, really. Besides, you’ve always had my back too." And honestly, she didn’t even think what she’d done counted as "standing up"—it was just the right thing to say. She couldn’t just stand there and watch her aunt be misled into misunderstanding Sister Ariana, could she?
Still, there was no denying it—Kiara now harbored an intense dislike for that Irene.
Amused by Kiara’s earnest expression, Ariana chuckled softly. "Mm, I know."
Ever since the misunderstanding with her aunt, Kiara had been walking on eggshells. As an orphan who had endured years of hardship, she tended to overthink things. She was terrified of saying the wrong thing and making Sister Ariana dislike her, too, which was why she hadn’t visited in so long.
But now, seeing that SIster Ariana still treated her the same as always, Kiara finally let go of the anxiety that had been gnawing at her.
With her worries eased, her smile returned in full force.
Eager to lift Sister Ariana’s spirits, Kiara launched into amusing anecdotes from school, hoping to distract her. Fortunately, she was a natural storyteller, and Ariana listened with genuine interest, even laughing along. Encouraged, Kiara grew even more animated, her excitement contagious.
By the time Lambert arrived with lunch, this was the scene that greeted him.
Eyebrow arched, he deliberately cleared his throat. Kiara turned at the sound, quickly standing up when she saw him. "Brother-in-law!"
