Edith had heard about this charm before. In her previous life, right before the SAT, Karen had brought it back for Hallie, making her wear it close to her neck at all times. And just as expected, Hallie got into a great university.

But Edith never expected someone to have given her a scholar’s charm in this lifetime. She held the yellow charm in her hand. It weighed almost nothing, yet somehow, it felt so heavy in her palm.

Marcus said, “My mom bought it from a famous fortune teller for you.”

Kane grumbled inwardly, ‘Mr. Larson, do you seriously have no clue how to chase a girl? You were the one who bought the charm, so why shove all the credit onto your mother?

‘Can’t you see how touched Ms. Lovett is? She was moved by you, and now all her gratitude’s going straight to Fiona instead.‘

Kane chimed in, “Ms. Lovett, do you know a girl named Mia?”

Edith narrowed her eyes and asked, “Why do you ask?”

Of course, Edith knew Mia. Mia was one of her good friends back when she was in school in the countryside. Mia was Cody’s ex–girlfriend and a troublemaker at school.

“Mia was just bad–mouthing you outside the gate at Sunspire High School,” Kane said as he handed her a piece of paper from his pocket.

The moment Edith read the contents, her expression instantly darkened.

Kane said, “Don’t worry, Ms. Lovett. Mr. Larson already took care of it. But until we drag out whoever’s behind all this, stuff like this might just keep popping up.

“They want to distract you from the SAT. So, how about I start personally escorting you to and from school for a while?” As soon as he finished, he felt an icy glare shoot his way.

He immediately smacked his forehead and added, “Actually, I’ve been swamped babysitting that abandoned factory plot lately, so I really can’t spare the time. Why not let Mr. Larson do the honor of taking you to school instead?”

Edith shook her head and said, “It’s okay. I can handle myself.”

Marcus didn’t want to pressure her, so he said, “I’ll arrange for two bodyguards to shadow you discreetly.”

Edith didn’t object this time.

A few days flew by without a hitch, and suddenly, it was the day before the SAT. That afternoon, school let out early so everyone could relax and mentally gear up for tomorrow’s big test.

When Edith got home, she found the whole house buzzing with excitement: Vincent had skipped the office, and all four of her brothers were there.

Shaun’s eyes sparkled as he saw her and proudly presented her with a drawing he’d made. It was a picture of Edith herself, with a line written on it: [Good luck on the SAT.]

Cedric pulled out a box and handed it over. He said, “This is a pen–last year’s SAT champion used it. Hope it’ll bring you some good luck, Edith.”

Zachary fished something out of his pocket and said, “I got you a scholar’s charm. You’d better wear it so you always have it with you, Edith.”

Joseph exclaimed, “Hey, Zachary, copycat. I got Edith a scholar’s charm, too.”

Edith grumbled inwardly, ‘So scholars‘ charms are just that easy to get these days. She carefully tucked the two yellow charms away, placing them together with the one Marcus had given her. She then said with genuine gratitude, “Thanks, everyone.”

Vincent cleared his throat and said, “I didn’t get you a gift, but I’ve canceled all my meetings these next couple of days–just so I can be here and support you through the SAT.”

Edith looked at Vincent, her eyes softening, but serious. Honestly, she felt a bit resentful toward him. If only Vincent had shown her even the slightest bit of care in her previous life, she never would’ve ended up in that

mess.

But lately, spending time together had made Edith see that Vincent wasn’t heartless—he was just insanely busy. Lovett Group’s entire future depended on him, and he barely had room to breathe.

Besides, Vincent was the kind of guy who was soft–hearted and easily swayed. He always chose to see the good in things–and never noticed the bad lurking beneath.

One had to put all the evidence right under his nose before he’d finally realize he was wrong-

Edith didn’t want to dwell on her previous life anymore. She might not need Vincent’s affection in this one. but that didn’t mean she wanted things between them to get awkward.

She thought, ‘Let’s just leave things as they are. After the SAT, I’ll be off to college in Bonrea, and chances are, we’ll only see each other a couple of times a year.‘

Edith replied, “Thanks, Dad.”

Vincent let out a sigh of relief. Over the years, he’d made more mistakes than he could count–so caught up in the business that he’d lost sight of his kids altogether.

He’d finally tracked down Hallie. She’d moved to Bonrea for high school and was living on campus- everything was normal, and he could finally let go of his worries about her.

Edith was truly outstanding; the road ahead was wide open for her.

But his four sons still needed his guidance and support. Vincent realized that he couldn’t just rely on Karen anymore or hope the kids would simply figure things out on their own, as he once had.

He was their dad–the one meant to light the way for his kids. Maybe he’d screwed up a lot before, but now, he was finally ready to step up and take responsibility. He just hoped it wasn’t too late.

The night passed in peaceful silence.

The next morning, the whole city was quiet. With the SAT underway, all the main roads were blocked, and the area around the testing center was especially peaceful.

Vincent personally drove Edith to the exam hall and stood there watching as she walked inside. He didn’t plan on leaving–instead, he waited right there at the entrance, determined to stay until she was done.

As he turned away, he caught sight of a familiar car parked by the entrance. He recognized it as the Larson family’s ride. Then he remembered Larry was also taking the SAT today, so it made perfect sense for the Larson family to be here.

Vincent didn’t dwell on it, just slid back into his car and started going through some paperwork.

Marcus sat in the car. He watched Edith disappear into the exam hall before turning to Kane. He asked, “You’re certain it’s Hallie?”

Kane nodded and said, “I cross–checked all of Mia’s contacts and dug into who’s really pulling the strings. No

doubt about it–it’s Hallie.

“She’s at Bonrea High School in Bonrea, taking the SAT as we speak. Mr. Larson, want me to go stir up a little trouble for her?”

Marcus sneered, “She’s all the way in Bonrea, and she still dares to stir up trouble in Sunspire? She must have a death wish.”

“Yes, Mr. Larson. Understood,” Kane replied, bowing his head. He immediately made a call to Bonrea.
