Hallie woke up to the pungent smell of disinfectant filling her nose. She found herself lying in a hospital bed, the blazing afternoon sun streaming through the window, her whole body suddenly breaking out in a cold
sweat.
She thought, ‘Wasn’t I supposed to be in the middle of the exam? Why am I in a hospital bed? What on earth happened?‘ Her mind was blank; she couldn’t remember a thing.
Her head throbbed painfully, but no matter how much it hurt, she told herself she absolutely couldn’t miss the SAT. Without hesitation, she slipped on her shoes, ready to dash out the door.
Just then, her assistant walked in from the doorway and said, “Ms. Lovett, the last exam has already started. It’s too late to go now.”
Hallie froze. Her knees buckled, and she nearly collapsed. The SAT had been her one shot at rewriting her entire life–yet now, in a heartbeat, it was gone. She’d have to wait a whole year to try again.
She screamed inwardly, ‘Who was it? Who the hell is the snake working in the shadows against me? I have nothing left now.‘
“Ms. Lovett, did you happen to offend anyone recently?” the assistant asked cautiously.
Jonathan had him look after Hallie, so of course, he needed to get to the bottom of this. But every lead turned out to be a dead end–he couldn’t figure out who was behind knocking Hallie out.
The attacker hadn’t held back, landing a blow hard enough to leave Hallie unconscious, but with enough restraint to avoid any blood or lasting wounds.
Images of Edith suddenly flashed across Hallie’s mind. Hallie fumed, ‘It must be Edith. Only she would hate me enough to go to such extremes just to ruin my future.
‘I had already been forced to run all the way to Bonrea, but that bitch still wouldn’t let me go. Hallie buried her face in her hands and cried silently.
She wanted to reach out to Jonathan, maybe complain or beg for his help, but he hadn’t contacted her for more than two weeks. Besides, she couldn’t risk Jonathan crossing paths with Edith. She felt completely lost, unsure of what to do next.
Her phone suddenly started vibrating.
Hallie glanced at the caller ID–it was Jonathan. She wiped away her tears, picked up the phone, but deliberately held off answering.
The assistant standing nearby couldn’t help but glance over. When he saw it was Jonathan calling, he breathed a silent sigh of relief.
He thought, “Thank God I haven’t been too neglectful of Ms. Lovett lately. If she complained to Mr. Quinn, I’d be in deep shit.’
Making sure the assistant saw the caller ID, Hallie finally answered the phone. “Mr. Quinn,” she called out

softly, her voice hoarse from crying.
Jonathan said, “Once you’re done there, have your assistant bring you over to my place.” With that, he hung
Hallie couldn’t decide whether to laugh or cry. She realized she’d been nothing more than a tool–used and discarded.
Jonathan had all sorts of places scattered around Bonrea, but he never brought any of his flings home. After all, he had a pampered wife waiting for him, and if she ever caught wind of what he was up to, all hell would break loose.
Hallie stood at the entrance to a lavish three–story mansion, the place exuding an almost intimidating opulence. Several expensive cars were parked in the front yard.
The assistant led Hallie in and said, “Mr. Quinn is upstairs in the master bedroom. I’ll leave you to go up on your own.”
Hallie pressed her lips together, then slowly made her way up the stairs. She checked the time—already past five in the afternoon. The SAT was over.
She thought, ‘Edith probably did just fine on the SAT. And me? At a moment when I should’ve been out celebrating, I am instead forced to put on a smile for someone else. Guess this is my one and only way out
now.‘
As soon as Hallie stepped inside, she was suddenly pressed down onto the bed–caught off guard before she could even react.
Hallie was nothing like Sloane. Sloane was the kind of top–tier actress everyone admired in the industry: mature, confident, her allure downright intoxicating.
But Hallie was an entirely different story—a breath of fresh air, innocent and pure, not at all like the women Jonathan had been used to.
After what felt like forever, Jonathan was finally done, only to find Hallie lying face down on the bed, quietly sobbing into the sheets. He asked, “Why are you crying? Did I hurt you or something?”
Hallie shook her head and choked out, “No, it’s not that. I’m screwed. I slept for a whole day and night yesterday and missed the SAT.” She started crying even harder, looking every bit the fragile, heartbroken girl.
Jonathan drew her onto his lap and said, “There are plenty of ways to make it in life. You don’t have to take the road everyone else walks. Tell me–what do you actually want to do?”
Hallie shook her head, tears streaming. She said, “It’s all ruined. My whole life is over. What am I supposed to
do now?”
Jonathan held back his impatience and said, “If you want, I can arrange for you to study for another year and take the exam again.”
“No, I don’t want to go through that again,” Hallie interrupted, shaking her head desperately.

If she had to study for another year, she’d be sneered at and bullied every single day–with no guarantee her scores would even rise. She couldn’t accept it. Not in a million years.
Just then, there was a knock at the door. Liam called out from the hallway, “Mr. Quinn, Elias is here.”
Jonathan raised an eyebrow. He poured money into Bonrea’s film industry years ago simply because he wanted a shot with Sloane. He even founded a production company–never a giant, but respected in the business.
Sloane remained the undisputed leading lady of the company, snapping up every prime role. Yet she was also Mrs. Quinn.
Since her marriage to Jonathan, not only had her belly stayed flat, but she had also become obsessed with fertility treatments. Work had slipped far down her list of priorities.
Jonathan didn’t need to ask what Elias wanted–clearly, Sloane had thrown a wrench into something at work, and now Elias was coming over to vent.
Jonathan glanced down at Hallie and asked, “Do you want to get into showbiz?”
Hallie’s eyes widened. Breaking into showbiz had never crossed her mind, yet she knew that anyone who made it became an instant focal point–scrutinized, celebrated, and showered in money.
With the right break, one could rise overnight to a height where admiration, envy, and untouchable glamour all came with the view.
