“Of course. After you.”
As I passed Andrei, I heard a snort. “You two are going to make home repairs?”
Damon stopped in his tracks and slowly turned to face Andrei. His eyes flashed. “Something wrong with that?”
Andrei shrugged. “It’s just surprising, that’s all. An Alpha and Luna could easily send some of the lower- ranking pack members to handle this. Don’t you two have better things to do?”
Damon turned to face his brother fully now. “You don’t need to tell us how to run our pack.
Furthermore, this is important. It’s good to be hands–on–maybe you should consider taking a page out of our book.”
He was right; Andrei had never been this hands–on with the more menial tasks that came with being an Alpha. He was excellent when it came to leading and taking charge, but he always delegated minor tasks like this to his subordinates.
It was partially why his lower–ranking pack members were a little chagrined with his leadership style. They barely saw him in town outside of mandatory events. He was an enigma. Even throughout our marriage, he had been an enigma to me, as well. He still was.
Finally, Andrei shrugged. “Actually, I think I’ll come. I’d like to watch this.”
I clenched my jaw, wishing he would just stay out of sight where I wouldn’t have to look at him. But Damon nodded. “We can use all the help we can get.”
“Didn’t say I was gonna help. Just watch.”
“Sure. Whatever. Just get in the car.”
After a short drive, we found ourselves in town. The house in question was indeed in a sorry state of disrepair–Damon had explained during the drive that a tree next to the cottage was knocked down during last night’s storm.
The tree crashed into the cottage, collapsing a large portion of the roof, destroying windows, and crushing several support beams. It was currently being cut up by the neighbors, who had brought their chain saws over to slice through the thick trunk.
Emily was wringing her hands on the front lawn. Her aging mother was sitting on a bench nearby, her head in her gnarled hands, as a few other pack members gathered around her to console her.
“Thank you for coming so quickly,” Emily said, rushing over. “Mom’s beside herself. We don’t know what to do.”
“We’ll get it fixed,” Damon assured her, already assessing the damage. “I brought some supplies, but we’ll need more lumber. Let me make a call.”
As Damon stepped away to use his phone, I looked over to see Andrei’s brows raised. He surveyed the damage and whistled low. “You’re lucky no one was hurt.”
