**He Knows the Door to My Soul and Who Forgot to Novel**
**Chapter 68**

The moment I laid eyes on the young Alpha, I recognized him instantly—Alpha David, the new leader of one of the southern packs, who had recently ascended to this position following the untimely death of his father.
He couldn’t have been older than twenty-five, yet his striking good looks were exactly as the rumors had suggested. His pack was situated far from Ashmoor, so I had never had the chance to meet him face-to-face, but his reputation among the ladies was legendary.
I was all too familiar with his kind. Young, brimming with arrogance, and far too accustomed to having his desires fulfilled without question.
After he had taken over his father’s mantle, tales of David had spread like wildfire—how he had cycled through three potential mates in less than a year, how the female wolves in his territory often lamented their fleeting encounters that led nowhere.
He was the quintessential playboy, a notorious womanizer, and the very last person I would ever consider accepting a drink from at a gathering where I already felt like prey.
“Thank you,” I replied with a veneer of politeness, my hand remaining firmly at my side, “but I’m actually in the midst of searching for my mate right now.”
His smile faltered slightly, a flicker of surprise crossing his features, and his gaze drifted down to my emerald dress, lingering on the neckline longer than I was comfortable with. I fought the impulse to cross my arms protectively over my chest, feeling exposed under his scrutiny.
“That’s a beautiful gown,” he finally remarked, lowering the flute of champagne he had been extending toward me. “It suits you even better than I had anticipated.”
I blinked, momentarily taken aback. What an odd and rather forward compliment to deliver to a woman he had never met before.
