Karline’s POV
Ethan’s soft breaths were like music as I rocked him gently in my arms. His little hand clung to my finger, so fragile, so perfect. My heart swelled with both love and fear.
When the door creaked open, I turned, smiling faintly. “Reid…”
But his face wasn’t soft. It was carved in stone. In his hand, a white envelope. His footsteps were deliberate, heavy, and every beat of his shoes against the floor echoed in my chest.
“The results are here,” he said flatly.
My stomach twisted. I forced a shaky smile. “Good… now you’ll see. You’ll see that Ethan is yours.”
He ripped the envelope open without sitting, without looking at me, just unfolding the paper with rough, sharp movements. His eyes scanned the words once, twice. His lips pressed into a thin line.
The silence was unbearable. My heart hammered. “Reid? What does it say?”
Finally, his eyes lifted to mine. Cold. Accusing.
“It says this child… is not mine.”
My entire body went numb. The words sliced through me, colder than ice, sharper than a blade. “What? No. No, that’s… that’s wrong.”
Reid’s voice grew harsher, louder. “Wrong? Are you calling this test a lie?” He shoved the paper toward me. “Look at it! Black and white, undeniable. This child is not mine, Karline!”
Tears rushed to my eyes. My arms wrapped protectively around Ethan as if Reid’s anger could harm him. “Reid, no. Please. He is yours. I swear on everything I have, everything I am...I never betrayed you!”
