Tracy turned to look at him. She did a slow blink as if she were looking at an idiot. "Who else would be here if not Death? Someone died. Of course, there is going to be death in here."
Tao looked like someone had whiplashed him. He slowly turned his neck to look at his alpha, who shook his head, silently telling the man not to ask any further questions unless he wanted to be spooked out of his mind. Because the fact alone that they had been inches away from death was enough to make them sleep with one eye open for days. Days.
"Right." Tao still looked a bit spooked out. Clearly, they all knew much less about the supernaturals in the world than they thought they did, and Finn didn’t like it. It felt like he was a little child who had no idea about the world in which he was living. The sudden shifts were making him a bit disoriented, and he didn’t like it in the least. He needed to talk with Killian and upgrade their library. Maybe add in a few magic books because their knowledge of such things was really limited.
Tracy continued to study the woman lying on the floor of the cottage. She was silently brooding, and with her going quiet, no one knew what to make of the situation, making the entire situation even more awkward and stressful. Veronica sighed as she took a step close and looked at Lisa, whose lips were still curved in that timeless smile.
"She was pregnant; I can sense the tendrils of love and affection that she had for this child before she died, that is why she is smiling. She must have found out that she was going to be a mother before she died," said Veronica, causing every man to snap their head in her direction. When she saw that they all were looking at her, she rolled her eyes and said to them, "What, I am the follower of the goddess of love; I can sense love. It’s not always about romance. You know? Maternal love is also love."
Ajax moved toward Tracy. As the head of the enforcers, it was natural for him to investigate the situation around him, but the second he crouched down next to Tracy, Finn felt his beast stir. He lunged to the surface, angered and furious that someone had dared to get close to Tracy.
This startled Finn, as he had never felt this possessive over anyone.
"What now?" Finn asked while suppressing the anger that was bubbling in his veins. "Are you going to stay quiet throughout the entire time?"
She didn’t look at him. Her eyes were still flickering as if she was assessing the entire situation in front of them. He couldn’t see it from where he was standing, but her eyes must be moving like she was in a cinema, like they were earlier. They always seemed to do that thing whenever she was thinking too hard. She rubbed the fragments of the black and silver strings that she had extracted from the skull of the corpse. "The child was not a human. But they still killed it—that means that they are real close..."
"Then we can track them," said Tao.
"That’s not what I meant," snapped Tracy. "I meant that they are close to getting what they want, or else they wouldn’t have treated this child so carelessly. It was an alpha child on top of that. Which is not good because if they get what they wanted, then we all will be in some deep shit, and I don’t like that feeling."
She got back to her feet, her eyes still flickering as if she were lost in thought. She then turned to look at Veronica and questioned, "Can you do it?"
"No. You are forgetting that I am from the same system. I have the same restrictions as you; if I do it, then I will be retained," said the girl with a frightened look in her eyes.
"Then do you have any idea? We need a bridge."
Veronica rubbed the tips of her fingers as she pulled at the seams of the sleeves of the dress that she was wearing.
