Chapter 25
As I guided Onyx toward the preparation area, the lively chatter and laughter among the riders abruptly ceased. All heads turned in our direction, eyes fixed on us with a mix of curiosity and skepticism.
Onyx shifted nervously beneath me, pawing the ground with restless energy. His breath came in rough, uneven gusts, and his wild, alert eyes stood out sharply against the calm stillness that had suddenly fallen over the crowd.
“Norah, horse racing is a man’s world—too dangerous for you,” Damian warned, his voice low but firm. “This creature you’re trying to tame is wild. You shouldn’t be risking yourself with something like this. Women belong in safe places. Why don’t you back out now and come home with me? There’s still time. But if you fall later, don’t say I didn’t warn you.”
His gaze swept over me, dripping with contempt, as if he pitied my foolishness. He shook his head slowly, disappointment and scorn mingling in his expression.
I kept my eyes on the saddle, refusing to rise to his provocation. “Mind your own business, Damian,” I said coolly.
That only seemed to fuel his anger. He snorted derisively and stalked away without another word.
Just then, a strong wave of perfume floated through the air.
“Wow, is that your secret weapon?” Camille called out, standing nearby with arms crossed, a smirk playing on her lips.
“Did you drag that scent from a slaughterhouse? It really fits your fallen-rich-girl image. I can’t wait to see you and that beast thrown out of the race,” she sneered.
I paid her no mind, focusing instead on brushing through Onyx’s thick mane, humming a soft, soothing melody to calm his nerves.
The horn blared sharply, and I swung myself into the saddle, feeling Onyx’s powerful heartbeat thumping beneath my palm. I stroked his neck gently. “Don’t be afraid, boy. Trust me. Trust yourself.”
Then the starting gun cracked through the air.
A dozen horses surged forward like arrows loosed from a bow.
Damian and his horse Hurricane shot ahead, their speed almost reckless.
I maintained a steady rhythm, urging Onyx lightly. Like a streak of black lightning, we held firm in the middle of the pack. With every turn and jump, we moved as one, synchronized and determined.
Halfway through the course, approaching a sharp bend, I steered Onyx to cut inside, suddenly pulling up alongside Damian.
His expression tightened. He was clearly unsettled.
He hated being outpaced by a woman he despised.
Hurricane shifted impatiently beneath Damian, who crouched lower in his saddle, his movements tense and strange.
As we rounded the turn, a sudden flash caught my eye.
+8 Pearls:
I blinked and caught sight of Damian’s right hand slipping behind the saddle. At the tip of his whip, a glint of metal revealed his treachery.
He had concealed a weapon on his whip.
I gripped the reins tighter, trying to close the gap and stop him, but it was too late.
Damian, sensing my approach, stabbed Hurricane fiercely once more.
Hurricane screamed in pain, wild and uncontrollable. The horse reared, then bolted sideways, charging straight toward the stands where Madame Clémentine was seated.
“Ah!!!”
The arena erupted in terrified screams.
Damian was thrown violently from his saddle, landing hard on the grass.
The frenzied Hurricane thundered toward Madame Clémentine.
“Onyx!” I shouted, yanking the reins and turning sharply, abandoning the finish line just ahead. I aimed straight for Hurricane.
The two horses collided with a thunderous crash, the impact nearly throwing me off. I clung desperately to the stirrups, pressing my legs firmly against Onyx’s sides.
My whole body shook from the force, and a burning pain flared in my left arm.
Clenching my teeth, I reached out and grabbed Hurricane’s flailing reins with all my strength.
“Hush… easy now… it’s okay, calm down…” I whispered through the pain, tugging gently while continuing to hum that calming tune.
Gradually, Hurricane’s frantic gasps slowed, the wild panic in its eyes faded, and finally, the horse came to a stop.
A stunned silence fell over the arena, then erupted into a roar of noise.
