Just after Anastasia had declared the medicine was tainted and the old man had confirmed it, the evidence conveniently vanished. The coincidence was too great.
“The medicine was just brewed. How could the herbs be gone already?!” Winni demanded, her face pale.
“Penny brought the medicine up as soon as it was ready,” Anastasia said calmly. “I imagine she would know best where the used herbs went.”
All eyes turned to Penny.
“I don’t know anything!” she shrieked, feigning innocence. “I wasn’t the one who brewed it! I just brought it up when it was done!”
“Then bring me the person who did brew it!” Murray roared.
Soon, the terrified servant was brought before them. Told that the life-saving medicine had been turned into poison, her legs gave out from under her. “It wasn’t me! I just followed the instructions!”
“The person who brewed it might be innocent,” Lauren interjected smoothly. “But what about the ingredients? The servant wouldn’t know the difference if the herbs themselves were tainted from the start.”
Her insinuation was clear. Penny seized on it. “That’s right! It must have been the herbs!”
The family’s suspicious gaze shifted to Anastasia. The herbs had come from Logan.
