Noticing Anastasia stifle a yawn, Harrison’s patience wore thin. He wasted no more words, turning his full attention back to her, his expression instantly softening. “Come on, let’s get you upstairs to bed.”
Anastasia nodded obediently and followed him.
Susan turned to Ryan, her voice a desperate plea. “Ryan…”
Before Ryan could speak, the old patriarch, who rarely intervened, spoke up, his voice heavy.
“Ryan, I let your foolishness slide before, but Harrison is back now. Don’t push things too far.”
His tone was stern, laced with a warning. When Ryan had first brought Susan home, Mr. Lancaster Sr. had been unwell and too worried about Harrison’s condition to deal with it. But now that his grandson was back and taking charge, he would naturally stand with him.
“And another thing,” he said, his gaze falling coldly on Susan. “Harrison’s mother is still alive. By bringing this… disreputable woman into our home, what message are you sending to the Lawson family? What does this say about Marina’s position? If word of this gets out, what will people say about the Lancasters?”
Harrison’s mother, Marina, was a Lawson, a prominent and respected family in Riverton.
Susan’s face went pale. The patriarch had called her “disreputable,” and his words implied he wanted her out as well. She tightened her grip on Ryan’s arm as if he were her only lifeline.
Meanwhile, in his room, Lennon was in a rage, on the verge of smashing everything in sight.
“Who does Harrison think he is, kicking me out? This house doesn’t belong to him alone!”
In the few months he had lived there, he had tasted the privileges of being a Lancaster. Seeing how doted on his mother was, he had come to see this place as his home and himself as a young master of the family. And now, Harrison returns and wants him gone in an instant.
Crystal bit her lip, feeling a similar sense of despair. “Does he really hate us that much…?” she whispered. She knew her mother was wrong to have been the other woman, but she had already apologized to Harrison for it. When Ms. Lawson was still living here, she had often brought her gifts out of guilt.
