Chapter 247
Emma let out a sigh of relief when Lydia sounded so certain. She didn’t find Lydia’s reason for “doing it for Emily” strange or unbelievable at all.
Deep down, she felt even more sorry for Lydia. “Lydia, you should think about yourself more. You always give in to Emily, but she never appreciates it. She even picks on you all the time.”
Lydia shook her head with a smile. “Mom, I don’t mind.” But her pale face and glistening eyes told a different story.
As expected, Emma felt even more sorry for her. She pulled Lydia into a hug and patted her back. “You look so weak. Are you feeling unwell again?
“Emily is like a walking jinx. You’re only in such poor health because of her in the first place, and even coming to the hospital for a check-up, she manages to make you sick with anger. She’s just so disappointing.”
Lydia had always been in poor health. After she returned to the Bennett family, it took years of care from a dedicated nutritionist before she finally got better. But Emily had only just come back, and Lydia had gotten sick several times.
Seeing how furious Emma looked, like she was ready to march over and give Emily a piece of her mind, Lydia smiled.
Lydia’s pale face wasn’t because she was sick; it was because, even after she’d done everything to push Emily down, Jeremy still managed to notice her. That was what got under Lydia’s skin.
But of course, Lydia wasn’t about to explain any of that to Emma. After all, the whole reason she was acting unwell this time was to get money out of the Bennett family.
Every time she had a “relapse”, the Bennett family would feel guilty about the sufferings she endured. Then she played it up and milked their guilt, for all it was worth, getting all kinds of perks and favors from them.
So, the more guilty Emma felt about her and the more she resented Emily, the more it worked in Lydia’s favor.
