Sterling chuckled, wrapping an arm around her waist, leaning close to her ear from behind. “Then who is your type, hmm?”

“I don’t know,” she said, playing dumb.

“Don’t know?” Sterling pinched her cheek. “Then maybe once you’ve had your fill, you’ll figure

it out.”

Claudia quickly hugged the man whose thoughts were clearly heading somewhere dangerous. “Y–you, okay? You’re my full–course meal!”

Sterling ruffled her hair, pleased. “Claudia, I can learn to make whatever flavor you like—but stay away from cheap junk food, got it?”

Claudia blinked. Was that supposed to sound wholesome?

But seeing where this was going, she wisely shut her mouth and kissed her jealous man.

She was still fuming when a man’s voice came from behind her. “May we talk, Ms. Zimmer?”

He pushed it toward her. “The Lancaster Group’s been developing this tech patent for seven years. I can sell it to you at a discount. I believe it’ll interest you.”

It had cost him countless sleepless nights and nearly everything he had. He’d hoped it would be the thing to save the family–lift them high again. Instead, he was being forced to sell it for cheap just to plug the holes in their sinking company.

His heart bled with every word.

And yet, even with that sacrifice, his potential buyer wasn’t biting.

Mandy tapped a manicured finger on the folder. “Honestly, I am interested.”

Before his eyes could light up, she added, “But let’s be real, Mr. Clarence—no one’s touching anything with your family name on it right now. Forget the patent’s worth; your company and your family are both ticking time bombs. No one knows when the next one will go off.”

Clarence’s tone sharpened. “But once the contract’s signed, it’s yours. Whatever happens to us won’t affect the deal.”

Mandy leaned back in her chair, arms folded. “Let me spell it out, Mr. Clarence. I don’t trust your character. And let’s not pretend–I’m clearly not your first choice, am I? You’ve been turned down over and over. Doesn’t that tell you something? When you burn every bridge, no one helps you rebuild. The Lancasters‘ past behavior is your biggest stain. I like making money, but not with just anyone. You’re not qualified.”

Sure, a free meal from the sky sounds great–but you’d better check which sky it’s falling from.

Working with Claudia had been great: taking down Quade, then milking Lydia’s mess to gut the Lancasters and the Fentons for a fat profit–that was already enough to feast on.

Getting greedier now would just be overkill.

She wasn’t about to ruin her partnership with Claudia.

“If this is about Claudia, our family was a victim in that, too,” Clarence said, frowning.

“That makes it worse,” Mandy shot back. “Being stupid is the bigger sin.”

His face flushed red.

Just as he was torn between swallowing his pride to keep begging—or walking away with what was left of it—a glass of red wine came flying from the side and splashed across his face.
