Natalie glared at him, her voice rising a pitch.
“Don’t change the subject. I’m talking about that man you keep calling my lover!”
Her chest heaved with every breath. “Let go of me!”

Jackson’s face was as dark as it could get. “Tell me, who’s the man who gave you that car?”
Just then, a deep voice cut through the tense air. “That would be me.”
Both of them turned at once. Natalie’s eyes flickered with surprise when she saw the man approaching.
It was Marcus. Dressed in a black suit, he moved with effortless poise; his expression was as indifferent as ever.
He stopped right in front of Jackson and pried his hand off Natalie’s throat.
Natalie’s breathing eased at once.
“Uncle Marcus, what did you just say?” Jackson’s voice shook with disbelief. “You gave her that Porsche?”
ད
“Don’t keep Ms. Foster from making medicine. Step outside with me.”
Marcus shot him a cold look before walking toward the tea room.
Jackson stared after him, then back at Natalie, his face darkening even more.
Natalie bent to pick up the ladle that had fallen, then calmly took
it to the sink to wash.
Meanwhile, inside the tea room-
By the time Jackson walked in, Marcus was already seated, making himself tea.
Jackson sat across from him. “Uncle Marcus, what the heck is going on? Why would you buy her a car?”
“More accurately, I bought it so she could take the child to and from school. Nothing more.”
“To and from school?” Jackson frowned, puzzled. “You mean for Lily?”

Marcus‘ voice was cool, detached. “Yes.”
His palm rolled the porcelain cup idly against the arm of the chair.

“But did it have to be a car like that? If word gets out, people will start assuming–you and my wife…”
Jackson’s voice dropped, cold and sharp, refusing to finish the thought.
Marcus‘ hand stilled on the cup. “Assume what?”
Jackson lifted his eyes. When their gazes locked, he caught a trace of mockery in Marcus‘
“Uncle Marcus, that day I came to see Natalie, I didn’t realize you two were on the phone. You must have heard everything, didn’t you?”
“Yes.” Marcus‘ tone was careless. “I heard all of it.”
“She’s seeing someone else—she even slept with him…”
“So you think the man who gave her the car is the same man she slept with?” Marcus asked evenly.
“Wouldn’t anyone think that?” Jackson’s eyes glinted cold and dangerous. “I’ve tried and failed to find out who he is, but I’ll get there eventually.”
ད
“You’re not clean yourself. What gives you the right to demand she stay pure?”
Marcus set his cup down on the table; the sound was heavy, final. His gaze was icy.
“Uncle Marcus, how can you take her side? She’s an outsider–I’m the Collins blood.”
“And since you know you’re a Collins, you still dared betray your wife?” Marcus‘ sharp as a blade. “Don’t tell me you and Ms. Victoria were innocent.”
“I-”
Jackson choked on his words.
eyes narrowed,
“You betrayed her first. What right do you have to condemn her?” Marcus said, his voice clipped. “You may not be legally divorced yet, but your marriage has been dead for a long time.”
Jackson studied him, suspicion twisting inside. Why does Uncle Marcus keep defending Natalie?

Just then, a knock sounded at the door. “Mr. Jackson, madam says Aiden won’t take his medicine unless you give it to him. He won’t let her near him.”
The maid’s voice snapped him out of his thoughts.
“Go take care of that. I’ll check on him later.”
Marcus lifted his cup and drained it in one sip. Jackson gave a stiff nod and left without another word.
Downstairs, at the end of the hall-
Natalie stood by the window, staring out at the storm. With every rumble of thunder, her heart sank a little further.
She had just tried to give Aiden his medicine; the child refused, knocking the bowl right out of her hands and shattering it.
