Alcee rested her head on Torg’s chest his fingers playing with the dampened tendrils of her hair while she absorbed the information he’d shared

with her.

“How are you feeling?” He asked quietly

She gave a one–shouldered shrug. “About as good as any girl could feel having to suspect her family wants to kill her and her child for real. [ can’t believe my father would go so far but my brothers? Well, it’s even harder to believe.”

“Their absence could be telling us they aren’t in agreement. I wish they would come to us if this was the case.” Torq said seriously.

“If they reach out to you, you will let me know right away?”

“Of course. This is Antero’s life we’re talking about.”

“It’s not only about Antero. It’s about you.”

Suddenly the sound of Avalanche whining through the monitor in Antero’s room made him groan. “I was just starting to relax.”

She snickered, “you brought her home. She is your responsibility.”

“You really don’t love her yet?”

She shrugged as he rolled out of bed and looked around the room for something to throw on his lower half.

“I don’t know. We were just starting to snuggle and she’s taking the body heat out of my bed.

His laugh made her smile. “Come with us.”

“Are you nuts? I get a nice warm bed all to myself.” She spread her arms and legs wide. Look at all this room, Torg.”

He grabbed her by the ankle and pulled her off the bed, “come on, lazybones. Come spend some time with your man on the roof. If you’re nice, I’ll let you blow me up there.”

“If you’re nice, I’ll let you watch while I do a bit of yoga, maybe some downward dog.” She grabbed one of his t–shirts from a pile on a chair, “also, you’re a slob and you need to start picking up after yourself”

“I’m not a slob. I’m used to having a housekeeper around all the time.”

“You leave a trail of clothes.”

“It bugs you?”

“I will learn to put my shirts in the hamper but,” he watched as she tugged it over her head, “if I throw all of them in the hamper how are you going to grab one and wear it like a dress to walk our dog?”

She followed him shaking her head as they tiptoed towards Antero’s bedroom. Pushing the door open they found Avalanche pacing circles on the other side and Antero snoring loudly in the bed.

Her eyes rested on Antero as fear made her study him.

Chapter 79

“We will keep him safe.”

“I know.”

“Come on girl,” Torq whispered to Avalanche as he led her from the room, and she eagerly raced him to the front door. He clipped her lead a harness on her and they left the condo unit to take the elevator to the roof but once up there he removed her leash.

“How come nobody else is every up here?” she asked as they got to the roof and Avalanche raced to the Avalanche was making good use of the area sniffing everything.

*I bought it all and made it private property.” Torq shrugged as he walked to the edge of the roof and stood boldly on the concrete edge.

“Get down from there!” Her stomach squeezed with a nauseated feeling at the sight of him standing on the edge. “Torq, we’re twenty floors up!”

“I’m king of the world!” he threw his arms wide laughing at her alarm. “Do you not like heights Alcee?”

“I don’t mind heights, but I do not like the thought of death.”

He laughed. “I won’t go splat, I promise.” He started chuckling, “makes me think of the first day I met Ant, and he commented about dropping people from the office.”

She shook her head. “He’s a funny kid. He is really growing to love you!

“He is, hasn’t he?” Torq smiled. “What about you?”

“Don’t push it.”

He gave her a sad smile, “I’m not usually the kind of person who allows himself to feel regret or to suffer from the fear of missing out but I’m feeling it now. I feel my absence in your lives has caused a deep divide and now I don’t want to miss a single minute as I try to fill it. I want to be around for all of it, I came to New York to make sure the Locano family’s reputation for being at the top of the food chain isn’t fucked with, but my priority has shifted, Alcee.”

She really did not like him standing on the ledge as he was. It was making her heart race uncomfortably, “Torq, can you come away from there?”

“Are you worried about me?”

The smile on his face made her roll her eyes.

“Because you don’t want me to get hurt?”

“No. I don’t want you to get hurt or die

“Because you care about me?”

“Well duh.”

“Because you can see us being a family and being together for a long time?”
