Chapter 83
Alcee was sitting with Lorita in the living room getting ready to watch a movie while the men in the family were busy building tower with every single block Antero could have hauled out of his bedroom.
“What should we watch?”
huge block
“Nothing which will catch their attention because I kind of like having the opportunity to sit and watch a movie without Antero picking it apart,” Akcee grunted as Lorita flicked through the titles. “The last movie I tried to watch while he was still awake was Wicked and let me tell you, there is nothing like a five–year–old who hates musicals to ruin an experience for you.”
Lorita snickered, “then let’s find a T
a rom–com or a musical so he won’t be convinced to come watch with us.”
A knock on the door made her look up in surprise but Torq didn’t even blink. Tito got up from where he was kneeling being incredibly careful not to knock over the stack of blocks and went to the door.
“Who is here?” Lorita asked nervously.
“I have no clue. It seems people get invited to my house without my knowledge all the time.
“Don’t be cranky, Akee,” Torq called out to her, “I did a good thing.”
“What did you do?”
“He invited us!” Susana cheered as she hopped over the back of the sofa to bounce next to Alcee.
“Oh, well this is good then.” She giggled as she hugged her friend and laughed at Amal who simply ducked past Tito’s outstretched arm and raced
to her. She hugged Amal too. “Amal, Susana, this is Tory’s sister Lorita. Don’t blame her. It’s not her fault.”
“Hey!” Torq shot her an annoyed glance.
“It’s nice to meet you. Have you known Tito your entire life too?” Amal asked with intensity.
“Yes.” Lorita asked slowly her eyes drifting to the man towering over them. “Why?”
“I need all the dirt. Alcee refused to do a deep hack for me on all his shit because she’s fairly sure it’s too well hidden and won’t give us anything since he’s besties with Kylen. He tried to talk to my father about an arrangement. I want to know all his secrets.”
“She is not the one to ask, Tito said smugly. “You can ask me. I am an open book. I will tell you everything you want to know.”
“I want to know about all the women whose hearts you broke.”
“There have been none. I follow Torquato’s lead and don’t date.”
“You’re a liar.” Lorita laughed in his face and then patted the seat next to her. “Come her. I will tell you all the shit I know.”
“Don’t believe anything she says. She’s a liar. She once fudged her report card.”
“I was six and I made up my own because the teacher was mean. She taught Torq and Tito and Bastiano and shit rolls downhill, ladies. I swear every teacher I was stuck with who endured those jerks first made sure to make my life a living hell.”
“And the fact you brought snakes and scorpions to class to terrorize your teachers is all Torq’s fault.” Brunella came into the space carrying a service tray with drinks and snacks.
“Oh, Amal, Susana, I really want you to meet Brunella. She’s Torq’s mom. The only other woman I’ve ever met who pushed a big head like Antero’s out her hoo–ha and lived to tell about it. She’s really nice and she’s been making all our meals and I’ll be twenty pounds heavier in a week. I swear the egeplant parmesan last night was the best I’ve ever eaten before. I was poking in the leftovers at breakfast, and they were cold.”
Brunella beamed at Alcee’s words, “it’s nice to meet you Amal and Susana. I made some biscuits for Antero.”
Antero came over and grabbed one and bit it, frowned and set it in his mother’s hands, “not as good as yours.”
“Ant!” Alcee was horrified but Brunella only laughed.

“A boy should always like his mama’s cooking the best.” Brunella winked at him. “You did say you only like the ones she makes with the chocolate chips.”
“But we don’t always need to voice our opinions on such things. It’s okay if you don’t like the cookie, Antero but you must be polite. Nonna worked hard to make a treat for you, and it should be appreciated for the effort taken to do something special for you.”
“Nonna, thank you for trying to make me cookies even if I don’t like them.”
Alcee grimaced at him and looked at Amal and Susana who were laughing behind their palms. Torq looked unbothered.
“You need to more polite.”
Brunella shook her head, “are you kidding? He called me Nonna. I am thrilled with the apology. If your mama gives me the chocolate chip cookie recipe I will make those for you next time.”
“You are my Nonna, Antero smiled at her, “and he is my Nonno.” He pointed at Cicciu. “He is my zlo and he is my zio. She is my tia, and so are they,” be pointed to Tita, Bastiano, Lorita, Amal, and Susana, “I like having all my family here even if you are loud and noisy and it hurts my
tars.”
“Yeah, dude, we need to work on your delivery,” Alcee shook her head and then felt the vibration of her phone. “I swear if it’s Tank calling me one more time to ask me where something is, I’ll kill him through the phone.” She frowned at the display and looked at Torq. “Mercurio,”
“What?
“It’s my brother. Mercurio is calling me.”
Alcee answered as she walked with Torq towards his home office. “Mercurio.”
“Alcee, are you sale?”
“Yes. Why wouldn’t I be?”
“Are you somewhere safe?”
