“I wouldn’t. I haven’t agreed with half his shit over the last fifteen years, and this is pushing me too far. Alcee, you need to know, we are bastards, but your brothers love you and we will never do anything to hurt you or Antern.”

“Except let your father lock her up and threaten to let his men rape her.”

Mercurio huffed, “it wouldn’t have happened. Over the last six years, he’s been losing more and more of his fucking mind but at the time, he told me before even going into the room he was going to bluff with her to try to force her to tell her who she’d fucked around with. His biggest concern was it was someone who made a video and was going to extort her with it and we sure as fuck couldn’t pay.”

“You let them hit me.”

“You

could have told the truth.”

“I did. I went online. I found a lover. I lost my virginity to him. We both gave fake names. There is no other story but this. It is the truth.”

“I am sorry for my role in this, Alcee,” Mercurio was solemn. “You should know, I’ve needed to lay low a few days because I’m moving shit around. I’m getting my wife and kids out of town until Dad is managed. I don’t want fall out hitting them. Falco and Alfio are both very discretely moving shit around. Michelo is sticking close to the deli.”

“What is your plan, Mercurio?”

“I am going to take my father’s control of this family away. My uncle agrees. My brothers and I will force him to stand down or he will need to be put down. He ordered me to kill my sister and her son for money. He is no longer in his right frame of mind or capable of running this family in any way. Our Nonno must he rolling in his grave.”

“How

can we help? Torq genuinely offered his assistance.

*You cannot.” Mercurio sighed loudly. “This is our family business, and I will oversee it as the head of the family should. Our only unknown was Alcee and Antero. Falco and Alfio both brought up the idea you were likely using her to make Dad spiral, and it makes far more sense than you falling in love with her after one night. With the hit on them, we worried.”

“Nobody said anything about love, Mercurio. Torq chastised. “My time with Alcee isn’t entirely physical but I won’t insult her intelligence by saying I fell in love at first sight. What I did do,” he admitted cuddling her, “was immediately feel dram to her as a person. She is funny, smart, capable, and business oriented. She took the one thing she owned outright and sold it to the highest bidder in order to improve her station in life. To me it spoke of a woman who knew what she wanted and would do what it took to get it. It inspired me. Learning she stood up to your father, bore my son, raised him into the incredible boy he is, has inspired me further. When a diamond is presented to you, shining and flawless, only a fool would pass it up. I am not a fool, Mercurio. I know a damn good thing when I see it and I am keeping it.”

“I’m not an it,” she grunted.

“No, you are not but you are mine.” He kissed

her nose, and she rolled her eyes.

“I will not insult you by asking you where you are because I know you don’t trust me,” Mercurio said with an even tone. “However, I will tell you, your father agreed to meet with mine later this week and is due in New York sometime soon.”

“He arrives today,” Torq said uncaringly.

“He is traveling with Molinaro. His sons are also laying low, but it’s believed they are going to try to overthrow you. There were a few of the Zanelli family you didn’t round up in your annihilation of them and they want blood.”

“Tam aware.”

“You know all this?”

“I know far more

than you would believe possible.” Torq laughed.

“Andreas Molinaro asked Dad for Alcee’s hand. Dad told him he could have it.”

“Well, he can’t have it. Bigamy is a crime in New York.”

Alcee realized Torq really didn’t trust Mercurio at all because he wasn’t revealing Andreas was dead.

“Don Lozano,” Mercurio spoke reverently, “when this is settled, when the dust clears, I want to see my sister and my nephew and know they are safe. Perhaps,” be cleared his throat, “perhaps we can arrange a new peace treaty once my father is no longer at the helm.”

We’ve been doing business the way our grandfather did and Michelo is using his new family as a way to distance himself from Dad and it’s working. He doesn’t know, We don’t want him to know. We’re going to take him down.”

“Will you kill him?” Alcee asked quietly.

“Will this upset you?” Mercurio asked with equal reservation.

“No. I hate him. He never liked me. I was the mistake when his vasectomy failed. He used to pull me out at parties to sit on his lap or parade me as his princess, but he never genuinely liked me.”

“We loved you. We love you still. We admit our failings and our faults, and we will do better. Our hopes are once the smoke clears you are able to be our sister again.”
