For a while,Liam hesitated, then decided to say it anyway. Miss McKinzie, it’s best if you keep your distance from himas far as you can. It’s safer that way.

During these episodes, Thomas’s mind sank into a fog. Sometimes, he didn’t even know what he was doing.

What separates people from animals is restraintethics, conscience, selfcontrol. But in those moments, Thomas was stripped of all that. He was nothing more than a beast driven by instinct, without reason or mercy. Anyone near him was in danger.

Sharon was special to him, and that was exactly what made Liam uneasy. He couldn’t gamble with her safety. What if Thomas regained his senses later and realized he’d hurt her? How could either of them live with that?

After a pause, Liam added, You could lock him in the room. Don’t give him foodjust some water. He won’t blame you for it.

No food meant less strength, and less strength meant less danger. That was how someone else had handled it before.

Sharon frowned. This didn’t sound like the way you treated a human being. Even a healthy person locked up for three days with no foodjust waterwould lose their mind.

Suddenly, she understood why Thomas had said he didn’t have friends, and why he barely spoke to Liam at all.

He was right. Liam really wasn’t very reliable.

Still, she didn’t say that out loud.

I understand,she said. Thank you.

Liam thought she’d accepted his advice. Miss McKinzie, if you need anything, you can call me anytime.

Alright.

After hanging up, Sharon sat for a moment, frowning. Playing the violin was out of the question.

Even if she somehow forced herself to play a piece, she didn’t know if it would helpand it would definitely draw attention. If Toni noticed, that would be disastrous.

She went out and bought two breakfasts, then stopped by a convenience store for basic suppliesbread, biscuits, and daily necessities. After that, she went to a pharmacy and picked up some medicine.

The area might have been old and worn, but it had everything one could need.

Passing by a hardware shop, she hesitatedthen went in. Under the shopkeeper’s knowing gaze, she bought a coil of rope and two pairs of handcuffs.

She still thought Liam’s advice was extreme, but the fact that he’d said it meant the danger was real. If she didn’t need them, fine. If she did, at least she’d be prepared.

The shopkeeper grinned. Miss, I’ve also got whips and candles, if you’re interested. The whips are special-

He kept rambling on, to the point where Sharon began wondering if she’d walked into a hardware store or an adult shop.

She managed an awkward smile. Thanks, but no.
