A chill ran through Sharon every hair on her armis prickled upright. Instinct told her Thomas was dangerous. It was the same hollow, knife–edge feeling that surfaced in moments when life and death hung in the balance.
Her feet stalled, as if nailed to the floor.
Thomas’s gaze shifted, as if he’d just recognized her. “Oh, Sharon,” he muttered.
She stepped toward him. “Thomas, eat something, okay?”
He rubbed his brow without meaning to. “My head is very painful. I won’t eat.”
“You’ll feel worse if you don’t,” she replied. “It’ll slow your recovery. You should try a little.”
For a moment, his pupils slid like a film; the world seemed washed in blood. Nothing registered clearly except her worried eyes, which reflected in his gaze with terrible clarity.
A sliver of reason returned. He dropped his head and muttered, “…All right.”
Sharon hauled him up and onto the bed. His hands were icy to the touch. His fists were clenched so tight the veins on the backs of his hands stood out, and his breathing had become heavier, as if he was holding something down with the last of his strength.
She sensed the wrongness. When she met his eyes, she saw a flash of red there–kill–light, gone as quickly as it
had come.
A rough, husky voice escaped him. “Sharon, get out–go.”
His Adam’s apple bobbed, the skin of his face hardening with strain. Containing himself had used up whatever reserve he had. The last thin thread of his reason was a taut wire. Touch it and it would snap. Then he would be a madman without brakes, lashing out at anyone nearby.
“Thomas…” Sharon began.
Before she could finish, a cold hand closed on her throat. The fingers were unnervingly cool; the pressure made
her flinch.
Thomas stared down at her, eyes rimmed in red, full of a terrifying, murderous patience.
“I told you to go. Why are you still here?” he hissed.
Sharon’s brow knit. “Thomas, wake up. Come to yourself.”
His fingers tightened. “You must want to die,” he said.
She tried calling out to him. She choked out, “Thomas. It’s Sharon. Calm down.”
At her name, something in him hesitated. For a fraction of a second, his eyes stalled.
Then the desk lamp came down hard on his head.
The impact sounded like a punch, and then the room went very quiet.
