Theobald lived far from this hospital. By the time he arrived, George’s arm had already been bandaged. Because the wound was deep, the doctor recommended he stay for a few days of observation in case of infection. George refused, saying he didn't need to be admitted and would call his private doctor if any issues arose.
Theobald ran his thumb over the prayer beads on his right wrist. "Mr. Spencer, work is never-ending. You should rest in the hospital for a few days."
"I'll rest at home," George replied.
Theobald didn't press further. "Thank you for protecting Maggie."
George shook his head, a gentle smile on his face. "Maggie could have avoided it on her own."
Theobald paused. He had thought Mr. Spencer was playing the hero, but it turned out to be more of a "heroic but unnecessary" situation. He glanced at Marguerite, wondering if she appreciated the gesture.
She did. Marguerite studied George's face and saw that he was being completely sincere. This man seemed to have an innate ability to see things from others' perspectives.
She smiled. "Even if I could have avoided it, your willingness to help is still something to be grateful for. Come on, let's go to the police station and give our statements."
Aaron had already called. The police had retrieved the security footage from outside the restaurant and needed them to come in for questioning.
When they got outside, Marguerite looked around for the burly man but couldn't find him. He really was a true Good Samaritan, doing a good deed without asking for a name. Marguerite felt a pang of regret for her earlier suspicions about him having a crush on George.
On the way, George sat in the passenger seat, while Marguerite and Jenny were in the back. It was Theobald's first time driving for his idol, and he was a little nervous, keeping both hands firmly on the wheel.
A police officer looked at Aaron with admiration. "You're the only person we've ever seen escape abduction and bring someone with you. You did good, kid."
Listening from the side, Theobald’s expression grew darker, his left hand restlessly working the prayer beads on his right wrist. Marguerite and Aaron had never told him any of this. Aaron had suffered even more than he had imagined.
The police assured them they would investigate the trafficking ring, starting with the man in the hospital.
It was late by the time they finished giving their statements.
