Marguerite, gnawing on a chicken leg, looked up. “Huh? No, it’s not like that.”
Aaron nearly burst out laughing at Joseph’s words. “Listen to this guy.”
Joseph couldn’t think of any other reason why Marguerite would be willing to sit with Aaron. “Then why are you eating the food he got for you and sitting with him?” he demanded.
Marguerite, Joseph, and Aaron were already the center of attention. Now, everyone stopped eating to watch the drama unfold.
“What’s it to you?” Aaron shot Joseph a look laced with hostility. What right did he have to question Marguerite?
You didn’t have to answer every question someone asked. Marguerite hadn’t wanted to reply to Joseph—he was being too nosy. But then she remembered she had added him on WhatsApp just to find Aaron, so she said, “Because he’s my brother.”
Joseph’s eyes widened. “How is that possible? You’re so beautiful, and he’s so ugly. How could he be your brother?”
Cedric blinked his small eyes. He hadn’t expected them to be siblings. Their looks were indeed worlds apart. But who just insults someone to their face like that? Joseph had guts. Aaron was definitely going to punch him now.
But to everyone’s surprise, Aaron remained calm. He simply picked up a chicken leg from his own tray and placed it on Marguerite’s. “Maggie, have another chicken leg.” Marguerite’s beauty was a source of pride for her brothers. It didn’t matter if he was a little ugly.
Cedric was amazed. “Aaron, you’ve got nerves of steel!”
Joseph’s comment, however, angered Marguerite. “Watch your words. It’s rude to judge someone’s appearance,” she said sharply.
Joseph was taken aback, but he still couldn’t believe it. How could Marguerite have a low-life, commoner brother like him? He couldn’t be her real brother.
Murmurs spread through the surrounding crowd.
“They can’t be blood-related, can they? They look nothing alike.”
“Maybe he’s an adopted brother? The tough guy probably cozied up to her because she’s pretty.”
Aaron didn’t usually mind people calling him ugly, but hearing these comments, his eyes fell. Marguerite was the most beautiful person in the world, and Theobald and Simon were handsome enough. He was the ugly one who didn’t fit in. “No, I have to get handsome. I can’t drag down Marguerite’s family’s good looks.”
The crowd had gotten their fill of drama for the day. So, Marguerite didn’t like Joseph. He had just been full of himself.
But after hearing what Marguerite said, a number of people eagerly came over.
“Marguerite, what kind of supplements are you selling? Let me add you on WhatsApp, I’d like to learn more.”
“My brain hasn’t been working well lately. Can I take them?”
“My grandpa is recovering from a major surgery at home, he could really use some. Let me add you too.”
Marguerite was speechless.
By the pond behind the cafeteria, Judy’s emotions had stabilized, but she still couldn’t believe Marguerite was alive.
