**When She Opened the Door to the Life She Was Afraid to Live by Nora Vale Kingsley**
**Chapter 177: The Enchanter’s Trap**
Merlin brimmed with self-assurance, convinced that he could manipulate Silas to his advantage. His scheme was straightforward—he would provoke Silas into poisoning Emma, then swoop in at the opportune moment to play the gallant savior. This way, he could unveil Silas’s alleged betrayal while simultaneously taking advantage of Emma’s bewildered state to forge a connection with her.
Once the truth came to light and Emma demanded retribution, Silas would bear the brunt of the punishment alone. After all, the concoction wasn’t even a genuine Enchanter toxin. Even if Silas were to claim that Merlin had provided it, Merlin could easily refute such accusations, ensuring that his own hands remained unsullied.
Silas regarded him with a calculating gaze, a faint smile gracing his lips as he accepted the small green vial from Merlin’s palm. “You’re quite the clever male, Malrik. But tell me, what is it that you desire in exchange for this little favor?”
Merlin had anticipated this inquiry, and he lowered his voice conspiratorially. “All I seek is your assistance in staying close to Ms. Tibarn. You know I arrived late to the gathering, and it seems she doesn’t hold me in high regard…”
“Very well,” Silas replied, tucking the vial into his pocket with a sense of finality. “Give me a few days. Once I’ve successfully established a bond with Emy, I will assist you.”
“Thank you, Commander,” Merlin said, a satisfied nod punctuating his words. “I won’t intrude any longer. I shall take my leave for now.”
As soon as Merlin descended the staircase, Silas made a beeline for Lucien’s study, the vial still firmly in his grasp.
Inside the study, Lucien was engrossed in Emma’s animated recounting of her encounter with Malrik. He had just found the perfect moment to inch closer to her when Silas barged in, disrupting the intimate atmosphere.
“What do you want?” Lucien snapped, his glare directed at Silas from his position beside the desk. This man had monopolized Emma’s attention all evening, and just as Lucien finally had a chance to be alone with her, Silas reappeared.
“Take a look at this,” Silas said, exuding an air of nonchalance, fully aware of Lucien’s irritation. He strode into the room, placing the small green bottle on the desk with a casual flick of his wrist. “Malrik just handed me this.”
“What is it?” Emma asked, her curiosity piqued as she reached for the vial. But Silas quickly intervened, his tone serious. “Emy, you shouldn’t touch it.”
The warning sent a wave of concern rippling across Lucien’s features. “Are you suggesting that thing could pose a danger to her?”
Emma instinctively withdrew her hand, a frown creasing her brow. Both she and Lucien turned their attention to Silas, who explained, “Malrik claims this is a creation of the Enchanter Clan, known as the Enchanter’s Draught. If a female inhales it, she loses her inhibitions and feels an overwhelming compulsion to bond.”
“Enchanters can concoct toxins?” Emma inquired, her surprise evident. “How do they even release them—like Edric does?”
Both Silas and Lucien exchanged glances, a slight twitch of discomfort passing between them at the mention of Edric.
“Not quite,” Silas replied, shaking his head. “The Enchanter’s Draught is actually a concentrated fragrance produced by Enchanters.
