**When She Opened the Door to the Life She Was Afraid to Live by Nora Vale Kingsley**
**Chapter 185: A Room for Marcus**
Corvin felt a weight in his chest as he attempted to broach the subject with Marcus. “Listen, Marcus,” he began, choosing his words with care, “Silas’ ideas… they’re really crafted to impress Ms. Tibarn, not necessarily for you.”
“I understand,” Marcus cut in, his voice devoid of inflection. He had sought Corvin out specifically because of Emma’s influence on him. “Just follow Silas’ suggestions for the room. That’s all I’m asking.”
Marcus had reservations about Silas; the man was far too clever for his own good, and Marcus feared the possibility of being deceived. In contrast, Corvin was a man of integrity—there was no pretense with him, no hidden agendas.
Corvin’s lips curled into a smirk, almost in disbelief. Who would have imagined that the half-dead therian had such unconventional interests?
It didn’t even cross Corvin’s mind that Marcus was doing this for Emma. After all, since his arrival, Marcus had mostly been a shadow of himself—either asleep or appearing as if he had one foot in the grave. He had never shown any inclination to vie for Emma’s affection alongside the others.
Yet, a flicker of unease settled in Corvin’s stomach. How on earth am I supposed to decorate a room like that? Perhaps I should consult Silas once more.
With a quick motion, he snatched another insect core from Marcus’ hand. “Okay, I won’t take this without doing something in return. I promise I’ll make your room look fantastic. Just wait and see.”
After pocketing the core, Corvin made his way to gather everyone for dinner.
He had taken the reins in the kitchen that evening, as nearly all the dishes on the table bore his mark. Silas and Lucien were preoccupied with their own tasks, Edric was engrossed in his relentless pursuit of ranking up, and Marcus—who seemed only half-alive and barely managing to taste his food—was hardly in a position to cook. Thus, Corvin had stepped in, and he didn’t mind one bit. In fact, preparing meals for Emma brought him genuine joy. She had once expressed that once he mastered these recipes, he could share them with the Ravaryn tribe back home. Now, his mother could enjoy delicious meals every day, and Corvin found himself completely at ease in the kitchen.
“Corvin, your cooking just keeps improving!” Emma exclaimed, flashing him a thumbs-up as she sampled his fried shrimp. Out of all of them, he truly had a knack for it.
“I’ll strive to do even better, Emma. I’ll learn to prepare everything you enjoy,” he replied earnestly, a determined glint in his eyes.
She nodded, her smile brightening the room. “In that case, I’ll teach you something new tomorrow.”
Watching the two of them interact, Silas, Lucien, and Edric exchanged glances tinged with envy. They wished Emma would share her culinary wisdom with them as well.
After dinner, Edric returned to his rigorous training, and Emma retreated to her room for her cultivation exercises. Corvin lingered behind, helping Silas and Lucien with the cleanup.
Leaning in closer to Silas, he whispered, “So, Silas, are you still interested in that Rank 10 mecha? Or maybe a Rank 10 insect core?”
