**When She Opened the Door to the Life She Was Afraid to Live by Nora Vale Kingsley 236**
**Chapter 236 Between Duty and Desire**
The Empire sprawled endlessly, a tapestry of power and intrigue woven across countless worlds. Within its vastness, it was not uncommon for influential figures to cloak their true identities, hiding in plain sight. Yet, as Marcus pondered this reality, skepticism gnawed at him. Emma’s uncertainty regarding the enigmatic Cotton Candy stirred a sense of curiosity within him. Perhaps it was time to put that rabbit to the test once more.
“When we return, I’ll give him a proper thrashing,” Marcus declared with a fierce determination in his voice. “If there’s something amiss about him, he’ll slip up. They always do.”
Emma nodded, her agreement evident, yet her thoughts wandered into the realm of possibilities. If Cotton Candy was indeed a Rank 11 male Etherian, then why masquerade as an ordinary rabbit and linger by her side? What could his true intentions be? The questions swirled in her mind like leaves caught in a tempest.
As their ship descended gracefully before the hospital, Emma clutched the box of freshly baked cakes and cookies she had prepared earlier that day. Her heart fluttered with anticipation as she made her way to visit Laura and her little ones.
Upon entering the ward, she was greeted by the sight of Rowan, Laura’s mate, who was already there, desperately trying to wrangle the five rambunctious cubs that had grown exponentially in just a few short days. They had transformed from tiny bundles that could fit in the palm of her hand into lively little creatures, crawling and tumbling across the bed, their squeals of delight filling the air.
Emma paused, momentarily taken aback by the chaos unfolding before her. Rowan, beads of sweat glistening on his forehead, darted around the bed, his arms outstretched in a futile attempt to catch the energetic cubs before they toppled off the edge.
“Laura, they’ve grown so fast!” Emma exclaimed, her eyes wide with amazement.
Laura chuckled, taking a moment to savor a piece of the cake Emma had brought. “This is their fastest growth phase. In just a month, they’ll be able to shift into their human forms, and then, oh, you’ll really witness the chaos unfold!”
In the interstellar society they inhabited, it was the fathers who took on the primary role of nurturing the young. Emma glanced at Rowan, who appeared to be on the brink of tears, then back at the wriggling pups that had overtaken the bed. A smirk tugged at her lips despite herself.
Now, she finally grasped why Silas had been so overjoyed when she had expressed her reluctance to have children. The mere thought of handing over five or six wolf cubs to that half-conscious Marcus was comically horrifying.
What a scene that would be—a father sprawled out, half-asleep on one side, while a pack of tiny wolf cubs clamored for attention on the other. Just picturing it sent shivers down her spine.
At the bedside, Rowan managed to catch one of the pups just before it hit the floor, only to have two others immediately start squabbling. Their sharp, high-pitched howls echoed through the room, surprisingly fierce for such small creatures.
He looked utterly defeated, casting a desperate glance toward Laura. “Ms. Jones, can I take them back now?”
Typically, the cubs didn’t stay in Laura’s room, but since Emma had messaged her in advance, Laura had instructed Rowan to bring them over so Emma could see how much they had grown. That was why there was no baby gate on the bed.
Meeting her mate’s pleading eyes, Laura gave a quick nod. “Go on. Take them back.”
With a sigh of relief, Rowan grabbed a nearby basket, hurriedly scooping up the squirming cubs. He managed to get the first one in with relative ease, but by the time he reached for the second, the first had already wriggled its way out again.
He dropped the second cub into the basket and lunged to catch the escapee, only for the second to tumble right back out. Emma and Laura exchanged incredulous glances, stifling their laughter.
