**When She Opened the Door to the Life She Was Afraid to Live by Nora Vale Kingsley**
**Chapter 258: The Beast God Mountain**
As Emma meticulously folded the last of her belongings, the door creaked open, revealing Marcus. He stepped inside, his expression weary, a testament to the relentless pursuit he had just endured.
“You came back alone? Where’s Malrik?” Emma’s brow furrowed deeply, a blend of confusion and concern washing over her. The absence of Malrik was unsettling.
With a heavy sigh, Marcus ran a hand through his hair, frustration evident in his voice. “He was too fast. I couldn’t catch him.”
Emma’s mind raced. How could an enchanter move with such incredible speed? It was baffling.
He took a step closer to her, his tone shifting to one of apology. “I’m really sorry, Ms. Tibarn. I wasn’t able to bring him back.”
Emma shook her head, dismissing his guilt. It wasn’t as though he had intended to fail.
“It’s alright,” she replied, her voice steady. “I’ll just ping him on the lightcore and ask him to return.”
With a determined flick of her wrist, she activated her lightcore, her fingers dancing across the interface as she sent a message to Malrik.
Emma typed: ‘Malrik, I’m not sick. You don’t need to find medicine for me. Come back now.’
There were so many questions swirling in her mind, things she needed to clarify with him.
Meanwhile, Malrik, who was racing toward the looming silhouette of Beast God Mountain, felt a sudden warmth flood through him as he read Emma’s message.
She must have sent this to prevent him from taking unnecessary risks. It was her way of looking out for him, and that thought filled him with a sense of fondness.
He quickly replied: ‘Ms. Tibarn, don’t worry about me. I’ll definitely bring back something that can cure you.’
Emma’s heart sank.
Oh no. I tricked him earlier, and now he’s going to think I’m really unwell.
Without hesitation, she initiated a video call. If he couldn’t trust her words in a text, perhaps seeing her face would convince him otherwise.
The connection established almost immediately, and Emma’s visage appeared, her cheeks flushed as if she had just stepped out into the brisk air.
“Malrik,” she began, her voice earnest, “I said I was sick earlier just to get you to reveal your true identity. I lied. Come back. I’m fine. I don’t need you hunting down medicine for me.”
Malrik’s gaze was glued to her projection, his eyes wide and trembling with uncertainty.
“Ms. Tibarn, as if I wouldn’t know whether you’re sick or not,” he replied, a mix of concern and admiration lacing his words.
He had noticed her sleeping patterns, the way she had seemed more fatigued than usual. He had even checked on her without her knowledge, ensuring she was alright. Those signs couldn’t be fabricated.
Yet, he believed she was lying to keep him from danger, and a swell of gratitude ignited in his chest.
