**When She Opened the Door to the Life She Was Afraid to Live by Nora Vale Kingsley**
**Chapter 294: The Dragon Who Wanted A Child**
The stars in his eyes danced and swirled, a tempest of emotions, before finally settling into a serene, gentle calm.
“Daddy’s here,” Silas murmured, his voice a soft whisper, filled with an innocent excitement that contrasted sharply with the turmoil in Drake’s heart.
Drake stood rooted to the spot, his gaze fixed on the tiny hatchling—his hatchling—who was now drifting away from him, leaving him in an abyss of confusion.
A hollow ache expanded within his chest, a sensation that felt as if it were slowly consuming him from the inside. Why was the little creature he had nurtured and raised with his very own claws now running toward another?
The light that once sparkled in his eyes dimmed, replaced by shadows of betrayal and hurt. He turned to Emma, his heart heavy with unspoken pain.
“Emma… my baby’s gone,” he said, his voice barely above a whisper, laced with sorrow.
Emma glanced at him, her heart aching at the sight of him. He was so tall, so imposing, yet in that moment, he appeared utterly vulnerable, his eyes shimmering with confusion and anguish. She felt a pang of sympathy, but the right words eluded her.
“Drake, don’t be sad. Remy was never truly yours. He’s Silas’ child. You only believed he was yours because your mental power faltered. Once you recover, you’ll see it clearly,” she tried to explain, her voice gentle but firm.
“Not mine?”
Drake’s gaze fell on the tiny fruit nestled in Silas’ palm, a bitter truth settling in. He wanted to believe Emma; he always had. But the weight in his chest refused to lift, a stubborn reminder of his loss.
“Emma,” he called, his voice small and trembling, “I want a child too.”
He longed for his own child.
A dragon hatchling, one that he could claim as his own.
“If you want a baby, then have one yourself. Why drag my huntress into this? Do you think that’s fair?”
Marcus’ mocking voice sliced through the air, sharp and unyielding, like a blade cutting through flesh.
Within moments, he was standing beside Emma, an arrogant smirk plastered across his face as he surveyed Drake with disdain.
“Did I hear you correctly? A dragon nearing forty, calling my barely twenty huntress by her first name?” he scoffed, his tone dripping with sarcasm. “Drake, have you no shame? An ancient dragon acting like a helpless whelp, seeking sympathy? What’s your skin made of? Dragon scales? So thick and tough that not even the sharpest blade could pierce it, huh?”
Drake’s eyes began to redden, the sting of unshed tears welling up, but Marcus showed no sign of mercy.
“Not only are you playing the victim, but you have the audacity to ask my huntress for a child? My female cut ties with you ages ago. Why would she want to bear your child? Because of that tear-streaked, old face of yours?”
Marcus scrutinized him with a slow, deliberate gaze, his smirk widening. “Do yourself a favor. Look in a mirror. Do you even deserve her?”
Savage didn’t begin to cover the cruelty of his words.
Corvin, standing off to the side, rubbed his arms as goosebumps prickled his skin. He silently thanked the stars that he had never crossed paths with Marcus’ wrath. The man’s tongue was far more dangerous than any ability he possessed.
If Marcus ever unleashed that kind of verbal assault on him, he would likely dig a hole and hide for the rest of his life.
