She had just reached the first floor when she spotted Silas coming out of the kitchen.

“Emma, you’re up this early?”

He’d assumed that after bonding, Lucien wouldn’t step out of his room for at least three days. But here Emma was, already wandering around the next morning.

“Early? It’s already ten.” Emma crossed the room and reached up to pat the little creature perched on Silas’s head.

Remy was dozing, but at Emma’s touch, he stirred, rolling over and nuzzling into her palm.

“Mommy!”

“Good boy. Go on, sleep.”

Emma’s voice softened instinctively, afraid of waking the little one.

Then she turned to Silas. “Got anything to eat? I’m starving.”

“Yeah, I’ve made breakfast. I’ll bring it out.”

Corvin had gone to greet Aria’s mates that morning, so Silas had taken charge of the kitchen.

“I’ll go with you.” Emma’s stomach growled. She wanted food immediately.

They stepped into the kitchen together. Silas opened the cabinet and took out a few dishes.

“Emma, have a few bites first. I’ll whip up something better in a bit.”

These were just the simple meals he’d made for Corvin and the others. He hadn’t expected Emma to be up so soon, so he hadn’t prepared her share.

“No need. This is plenty.” She was hungry, but nowhere near her old appetite when she was carrying Remy. A bowl of pasta was enough.

Silas sat down across from her, watching as she ate.

“Emma, where’s Lucien? Why isn’t he down here with you?”

After bonding, how could Lucien let her wander off alone? Unless… there is trouble? A battle call? Or something had come up?

Emma froze for half a second at his question before replying calmly, “He’s still resting.”

She wasn’t about to explain what exactly had happened last night.

“What?”

Silas stared, certain he’d misheard.

“Emma, you mean you’re up, but Lucien’s still in bed?”

“Yeah.”

Emma slurped the last bit of pasta, nodded, and said, “He was a bit tired last night, so I told him to sleep in.”

Silas couldn’t utter a single syllable.

No way.

Absolutely no way.

He blinked at Emma’s empty bowl, then hurriedly stood. “Do you want more?”

Emma shook her head. “No thanks, I’m full.”

“Alright, I’ll clean up.”
