Farewell My Stepfather novel Chapter 15

Chapter 15

Traumatized by the drastic family changes, Paulette refused to talk for at long time no matter how hard the Chapman family tried.

As Maxine was thinking of getting Paulette a shrink, she noticed that Paulette had grown fond of their neighbor’s dog.

It was a big golden retriever that played with a ball in the yard every day.

Little Paulette would stand outside the yard, watching with a smile.

Given this, instead of getting her a shrink, Maxine decided to observe her

for a while.

One day, as Paulette crouched next to the fence, she locked eyes with the golden retriever inadvertently. She instinctively shuddered, but what she felt the most was curiosity.

So, she didn’t move and just tilted her head to continue to look it in the

eye.

Until someone pulled it aside.

She looked up and saw an unbelievably good–looking face.

Jeremiah was looking down at her. He said with an amused glint in his eyes, “Are you trying to steal my dog?”

She shook her head hastily. “N–No. I’m not.”

“Then why were you staring at him? You made him shy.

She said nothing while widening her eyes, thinking, “Will dogs be shy?”

Amused by the cute look on her face, Jeremiah chuckled and wanted to tease her even more. He crooked a finger and said, “Wanna touch him?”

She was stunned for a second before nodding.

“Come here then. Touch him.”

Yet, as soon as he opened the door, he let the dog lunge at her. Caught off guard, she fell backward.

Terrified, she burst into tears at once.

Maxine heard her cries and hurried over. Upon seeing the tears on her face, Maxine breathed a sigh of relief.

“Paulette has never cried. I’m so glad she finally did. Thank you,

Jeremiah.”

From that day on, Maxine asked Jeremiah to spend more time with Paulette together with his dog.
