Chapter 20
A loud crash rang out.
The overloaded shelf crashed down.
Gawking at Patricia, Paulette froze, her mind going blank.
She thought, “What happened? How come Patricia just…”
In the next second, she understood.
Nelson strode in, pushed the shelf away, held Patricia in his arms, and looked at her icily. “This is the second time, Paulette. You totally let me down.”
Nelson hastily brought Patricia to the hospital. Paulette stood by the door. After a while, she still felt paralyzed.
The assistant came over and asked warily, “Ms. Davenport…do you need. to go to the hospital?”
“I…” Paulette wetted her dry lips and said hoarsely, “I’m fine.”
The assistant didn’t know what happened. When she came over, she only saw Nelson run out of the trashed restroom with a disheveled Patricia in
his arms.
Paulette closed her eyes and took a deep breath before saying softly, “I should go if you don’t need me. About Patricia… Please let me know if you
get news.”
Paulette didn’t know how she went home safely.

Chapter 20
Dejected, she slumped down on the couch and pinched her numb hand.
How…
How come Patricia had that jade pendant?
Paulette suddenly remembered something. She got up, dashed into Nelson’s study, and started rummaging through the place.
No… Nothing.
She looked into every drawer and even opened the safe.
No sight of her familiar jewelry box.
Paulette sat on the floor, lost in thought. The door of the study was opened with a loud sound.
The mess fueled Nelson’s anger. He roughly forced Paulette to stand up.
“How could you continue to cause a mess? You’ve seen the damage you’ve done!”
Paulette’s arm hurt. But Paulette didn’t move or struggle. She merely looked at Nelson with red–rimmed eyes and asked, her voice harsh, “Where’s the jade pendant Mom left me?”
