Henry sat on his dad’s lap, little face tipped up, listening like he was solving a puzzle, even if no one could tell whether he caught any of it.

“So then—” Cooper glanced at his brother-in-law, looking guilty as anything.

Andre frowned. “This about me?”

Cooper nodded. “Well, after I found out you married my sister—that day you pulled me aside and gave me that whole speech, it actually made a lot of sense to me…”

Andre shot him a look. “Be straight with me.”

“The truth is, I realized how outmatched I was. Back then, thinking I could fight you for my sister—and for Henry—was just me being delusional.”

Henry’s name came up again, and he scrunched his nose, puzzled.

Cooper didn’t look away. “You promised me that day: if my sister ever wasn’t happy with you, I could take her and Henry away. But honestly? That sounds nice, but if it ever came to that, I’d be lucky if the Cedillo family let me walk away with even one of them.”

“I spent those years overseas, figuring out everything about the Lux family. And if I could pick apart their secrets, I knew I could dig up yours, too. Asher—what he’s really up to, how Mr. Nettleton landed his job, Mars with his military ties—you’re all friends.”

“If it ever came down to it, forget taking my sister and Henry—even going up against the Irvin family, you could take them down in a blink.”

“So you started getting close to the royals just to deal with me?” Andre cut straight to the chase.

Cooper looked even more sheepish; after all, Andre had always treated his “piggy sister” and “little dumpling” nephew pretty well. “Andre, it was just in case. I wasn’t really planning to go after you.”

“If I ever treated either of them badly, you’d have soldiers aiming guns at me, huh?”

“Yup.”
