“I’ve taken the fall for you more times than I can count—you know that, right?” Andre grumbled. The whole point of getting in with the royals was to watch his own back, and yet somehow he always ended up making up stories to keep his brother-in-law out of trouble.

Trouble only ever found Andre when it came to Cooper.

Cooper mentally tallied up all the times Andre had covered for him. Yeah, his brother-in-law had definitely bailed him out more than a few times. “Hey, Andre, if my sister found out I was hanging out with the royals, you think she’d be proud of me?” he asked.

Andre shot him a look. “Mia’s first thought would be that you’re getting mixed up in all that dangerous royal succession drama, and that you don’t give a damn about your own safety. Second, she’ll think you only got involved because of her and the kids—she’ll feel like she and the kids are just weighing you down. She’d be touched, but also guilty. And third, from now on, she’ll always be worrying about you running into trouble overseas.”

Cooper leaned back in his seat and sighed. “Knew it. That’s why I never tell her the whole story.”

Just then, Andre’s phone rang again. He glanced at the screen and picked up. “Hey, Mia.”

“Babe, quick—how do I prove I’m actually your wife?”

Andre blinked. “What?”

On the other end, Mia sounded like she was about to explode. “I’m about to storm the palace, Andre. The palace! Our son’s been missing forever; I have to find my baby! No matter how much mischief he causes, he’s still the kid I carried for ten months!”

Suddenly, the phone was passed to a certain little troublemaker. A familiar tiny voice piped up, “I’m right here, Mommy~”

Mia’s nerves instantly loosened. But a heartbeat later, she snapped, “Henry! So you remember you’re my kid! Just wait till you get home and see what happens!”

Henry, lips pouted and eyes big, glanced up at his dad. Why did it always end with him getting scolded?

It wasn’t until nearly noon that Mia finally reunited with her son.

The second they saw each other, the rest of the world faded away. They hugged, long and tight, all but melting into each other for three whole minutes, whispering how much they’d missed each other. Then Mia gave Henry’s little bottom a gentle smack or two. “Why are you covered in dirt? Did you crawl through a doggy door or something?”

Henry clapped his hands over his mouth. “Cooper did it too.”

At the mention of her brother, Mia fixed her gaze on Cooper, who looked like he wished he could sink through the floor.
