After lunch, Mia sat in the classroom, waiting for her afternoon class to start, quietly flipping through a book. Jamie had gone to pick up a package and wasn’t back yet.
Outside, autumn colored everything in gold. Mia sat by the window, strands of her hair falling and casting soft shadows across the pages. In the empty classroom, the only sound was the gentle rustle of paper—calm and comforting.
Jamie came back, package in hand. When she reached the doorway, she paused, catching sight of Mia bathed in that cozy sunlight. She couldn’t help but slow down and soften her voice.
Mia’s phone wallpaper was a close-up of her cheeky little boy. The peace didn’t last long—her son’s face lit up the screen again, and her phone started ringing.
She answered, and Henry’s voice chirped, “Mom, are you done with class yet?”
“Not yet, honey. I’ll come pick you up after school,” Mia replied.
In the background, her husband shouted, “Henry, come eat! Where are you running off with my phone?”
Henry ignored him, yelling into the phone, “Mom, don’t forget to come get your baby after school!”
Mia laughed softly. “I know, sweetheart. Now go eat your lunch.”
She heard Andre wrangling the phone away from Henry. “Mia, did you get something to eat?”
“I did. I’m in an empty classroom, just reading. Make sure he finishes lunch, then let him play for half an hour before his nap.”
“I’ll take him downstairs to stretch his legs. He’s been climbing the walls all morning,” Andre replied.
“Good idea. And don’t forget to put some warm water in his cup before you go out,” Mia reminded him, then hung up.
Jamie, watching the whole scene, shook her head in admiration. “Mia, you’re so together. Like, really grown-up.”
Mia blinked. “Me? You think so?”

After lunch, Henry grabbed his dad’s hand and they headed out, leaving Noah in charge. “Have someone tidy up the place,” Andre said.
