After a bit, another one of Mr. Nettleton’s guys showed up.
Since it was New Year’s, he’d been home eating dumplings with his family. Then he remembered the boss and his wife at the hospital—and, more importantly, the new baby. So he packed up a tub of homemade dumplings and brought them over. “Hey, boss, why are you standing around outside?”
The boss shrugged, “Just soaking up some sun. What’s up?”
“My mom made dumplings for the holiday, so I brought you and Annie some. Why aren’t you upstairs? It’s freezing out here,” the guy asked, looking puzzled.
The boss replied, “…Haven’t had enough sun yet. Go on up without me.”
The guy scratched his head—since when did the boss care about sunbathing? He just didn’t get it.
Upstairs, he found Annie. “Annie, my mom made dumplings, so I brought some over for you guys.”
The baby had just finished her bottle and was back to napping. Unable to resist, the guy gently picked her up for a cuddle. “Annie, how come Mia feels so light? Is she too skinny?”
The Martin sisters just looked at each other.
Maja couldn’t help but wonder how Emmery ever managed to lose to this crew.
Annie said with a smile, “She’s just a newborn—hasn’t even been a month yet.”
He held the baby for a while, then looked at Annie, curious. “So, does the boss really like sunbathing now?”
Annie nodded, “He does.”
He mumbled under his breath, “The boss is turning into an old man…”
After one last cuddle with little Mia, he handed her back to Annie. Knowing he shouldn’t hang around too long, he stood to leave. Annie handed him the lunchbox he’d brought, freshly washed. “Kent, take this back with you.”
