There’s a shift that’s happened between me and Sebastian. I can feel it in the way we are together. Everything between us feels more intimate, more connected. At least, it does on my end. Even Sebastian asking me what I wanted in class last night as far as orgasms seemed personal. He wanted to bring me pleasure regardless of what he was teaching in class. And, of course, I poked the wolf, and he refused to back down. “Is everything okay, Haley?” She looks like she’s on the verge of

tears.

“I did the thing I wasn’t supposed to do,” she says softly.

“Which thing is that?” I ask, pretty sure I already know. I’ve done

it too.

She looks at me with tears brimming her eyes. “I fell in love with Tyler.”

“Oh, honey,” I say, pulling her into a hug.

“He told me he loves me, and he wants me to come for his birthday party. He thinks we’re mates. But what if … what if he finds her and I have to watch this man, this perfect man, fall in love with someone else in front of my eyes,” she says, the tears coming now.

I sigh, holding her as she cries. “I wish I had a good answer for you, but I don’t. It’s a risk, you’re right. He’s the incoming Alpha and every eligible female will be there for his birthday to see if he’s her mate. You’ll have to decide if you can handle that, Haley,” I say as she looks up at me.

“Would you go with me? I mean, he said he invited you and Ezra, foo. Could you and I go together, maybe and if he finds her, we could just leave,” she asks, looking hopeful.

“Yeah, I could do that. I know that his birthday is during the week between semesters, so I could go and still get back in time to ride the Train back to the Academy,” I tell her.

“Thanks, Christina. It would mean the world to me. And, if I’m not his mate, then I’ll be back to ride the Train, too. I’ll need

I’d never considered that I’d lead a pack. That was always Dane‘ s calling, but something about Haley’s words make my heart constrict. It means more to me that I ever thought it would to hear someone say that.

“Hey… uh, am I interrupting?” Tyler asks, walking up and giving Haley a concerned look.
