“I don’t know. What I do know is that I’m your guardian. That puts a power differential between us. I never, ever want to worry that something happened between us because of that power differential.”

I close my eyes, trying to regain some semblance of the control that Enya so easily steals from me.

“I never want anything to happen between us because of that power shift. It’s not fair to you. I know we’re very close in age, but the reality is that you are not eighteen and I am. In our society, that is a big difference. I’m responsible for ensuring your safety, not exploiting my position to take advantage of you.”

“What if I want this too?” she asks. Her sweet voice is nearly my undoing. But I can’t fuck this up by having sex with my ward, no matter how desperate I am to have her.

“That could be a result of me holding you at night, or you feeling safe because I’m here. What you feel for me may not be the mate bond. We won’t know that for sure until you turn eighteen. Until then, I have to keep you safe, even if that means keeping you safe from me.”

“I see,” she says, putting her hands on my chest and pushing me away from her.

“Do you?”

“But not interesting enough that you’ll bypass your precious morals?”

“I’m trying to do the right thing here, Enya.”

“Yes, I see that,” she says, moving away from me. I suddenly feel cold, like the heat of her body was the only thing keeping me warm.

“I’ll make it easy for you, Christian,” she says.

Before I realize what she’s doing, she walks out of the room.

I stare at the door, not sure if I want her to come back in so I can finish what we started, or stay away, so I can be the man and guardian that I‘ m supposed to be.

While my brain is still struggling with instinct, one side wanting to do what’s right and one side wanting to claim what my wolf considers ours, there’s a knock at the door.

“Come in,” I say, turning away so whoever it is can’t see the struggle on my face.

“I brought you some food, Christian, since it seemed like you and Enya were going to miss breakfast,” Shane says.

I school my features before turning around to face Shane.

“Thank you. Ready to go look over some medical records?” I ask, taking a bite of the breakfast burrito he brought for me.
