Chapter 229
:
The instant Ian’s gaze met Chloe’s, he instinctively nudged Margaret aside.
Margaret didn’t bat an eye at Ian’s attitude toward her.
She greeted Chloe warmly, “What a coincidence, Dr. Irvine.”
Chloe and Joanna stepped out of the elevator and just nodded politely back, as a reply.
Chloe and Joanna walked right past Ian, never once glancing his way.

Watching Chloe walk away, Margaret couldn’t help but remark, “No wonder you’re so set on getting back together. Your ex–wife really is beautiful.”
When Ian didn’t respond, Margaret glanced back and saw he was totally spaced out.
She spoke up again, “Mr. Hamilton, let me walk you back to your room.”
Once Margaret got Ian settled back in his room, she called for a doctor.
The doctor checked and cleaned up Ian’s wound, then put him on a drip.
Ian’s attending doctor gave Margaret a stern look and said, “Are you his relative or what? How could you be this careless? His wound’s started bleeding and gotten infected for the third time already. From now on, he’s not going anywhere–he needs to stay in bed and rest, no exceptions.”
Margaret shot Ian a glance and clarified, “Sorry, doctor, I’m just a friend, not family. But I’ll make sure his folks watch over him properly.”
Not long after the medical staff left, Patrick and Mia hurried in.
Seeing them arrive in such a rush, Margaret sensibly grabbed her bag. “Since Patrick and Mia are here now, I’ll be heading out.”
After leaving lan’s room, Margaret headed over to the outpatient building to pick up her grandma’s meds.
She bumped into Chloe and Joanna again in the outpatient area.
When Joanna saw Margaret heading straight for Chloe, she slipped back into the exam room.
In the outpatient corridor, Margaret stopped about a step away from Chloe.
She explained, “I was just giving Mr. Hamilton a lift to the hospital. Dr. Irvine, don’t get the wrong idea.”
Chloe couldn’t help but smirk. “Miss Goodwin, lan and I are divorced. You really don’t have to explain anything to me.”
Margaret looked at her earnestly. “But Mr. Hamilton has been fighting with his family over you. Anyone can see he still cares about you?

Chloe’s face went cold. “That’s his business, not mine.”

Margaret softened her tone. “Relax, Dr. Irvine. I’m not Andrea Sherman–I’m not the kind who cries and stirs up trouble in front of men.”
When Chloe didn’t respond, Margaret continued, “Honestly, Mr. Hamilton is the most suitable candidate to marry into the Goodwin family right now, and I plan to go after him.”
Chloe replied coolly, “Miss Goodwin, Ian and I are divorced. No matter what happens, I’m never going back. If you want him, be my guest–it’s none of my business, and you don’t need to report to me.”
Margaret moved in a little closer, her heels clicking.
She said, “But it takes two to tango, Chloe. If you were really so certain and never gave Mr. Hamilton a shot, would he really go as far as risking his life for you?”
Chloe raised an eyebrow. “If he wants to throw himself at trouble, that’s his problem, not mine.”
Their eyes locked, sparks flying in the air between them.
Margaret stepped even closer to Chloe, her heels clicking against the floor.
She lowered her voice, almost a whisper. “Dr. Irvine, like I said—I’m not Andrea Sherman. I have the family, the connections, and the power to make any woman disappear from Ian’s side.”
Chloe was really put off by Margaret’s bossy attitude.
She retorted, “If you were so sure about it, why didn’t you try to push me out of Ian’s life back when he married me?”
Margaret just smirked. “Because I knew you and Ian were never going to make it.”
She leaned in and said, “Doesn’t matter if it’s you or Andrea–neither of you belong with Ian. Breaking up was only a matter of time.”
The two women locked eyes, standing so close that the tension between them was almost palpable.
Margaret gave Chloe a polite look, then turned and walked away decisively, without another word.
Joanna came out of the exam room, eyeing Margaret’s retreating figure and couldn’t help but mutter, “Ms. Irvine, that woman is seriously arrogant.”
Chloe didn’t care about anything Margaret had just said.
Just like Margaret herself said, she’s not Andrea Sherman.
She was born into an influential family, always by her father’s side helping run the Goodwin Group.
She’s always fighting with her brother over control of the company. That woman’s got ambition like you
wouldn’t believe.

Chloe gave her a reassuring smile. “You’re you, they’re them. I’m not that clueless.”
Julian gestured at Chloe with his long, slender fingers, shaking his head in exasperation.
Once she hung up, Chloe called Arthur Logan.

Julian looked over and teased. “So now that everyone’s here, you think you can focus and not botch my acupuncture?”
Chloe could only roll her eyes in silent resignation.

At the same time, lan was lying in his hospital bed, feeling restless and uneasy.
He kept glancing toward the door, wishing Chloe would walk in any minute.
Earlier at the elevator, Chloe had seen him with Margaret–he was sure she’d misunderstood what was going
He’d already messaged her trying to explain, but all he got was radio silence.
Ian was dying to see Chloe–he couldn’t get her out of his mind.
He had to talk to her in person, no matter what–only face to face could he clear things up.
Just then, a nurse popped in to check Ian’s temperature. He asked anxiously, “Has Ms. Irvine finished for the day?”
The nurse shook her head. “I don’t know, sorry.”
Patrick, sprawled out on the couch, suddenly sat up. “Quit asking about her–she’s not at the hospital right
now.”
Ian glanced at the clock, frowning to himself. ‘It’s not even time for Chloe to get off work yet–so why isn’t she here?
He looked at Patrick and asked, “So where is she now?”
Patrick shrugged, “She’s over at Rowe Estate playing mahjong–already dropped three rounds in a row. Just messaged me to come ‘save her from total defeat.”
1an hadn’t even processed the words before the thermometer in his hand gave a sharp crack–snapped clean in two. Seriously? She’s out there having fun while I’m stuck here?‘ he thought, his frustration barely contained.
