Chapter 231

Chapter 231

Chloe and Edward sat across from each other, sizing each other up.

Neither bothered to hide the challenge in their eyes.

Edward finally spoke up. “If you’d just been a bit more generous and knew your place back then, things between you and Ian wouldn’t have ended up like this.”

Chloe swore under her breath.

‘Mia was right,‘ Chloe thought to herself. ‘She really hit the nail on the head.‘

This old bastard from the Hamilton family is selfish, always covering for his own, and absolutely impossible to reason with, Chloe fumed.

‘To him, his precious grandson is blameless–it’s all somehow my fault for not being the sweet, accommodating pushover he wanted,‘ she scoffed inwardly.

Chloe, clearly annoyed, didn’t bother to hide her attitude. “So what made you stoop so low as to come see someone as ‘small–minded and tactless‘ as me, Mr. Hamilton? What’s this all about?”

Edward sneered, a tone of utter contempt in his voice. “Ian is dating Miss Goodwin these days. As long as you promise to stop meddling in his life and quit wrecking his relationship with her, I’ll make sure the Irvine family doesn’t pay the price.”

Chloe shot back, “Seriously, what makes you think I’m dying to chase after your loser grandson?”

Edward snorted, full of disdain. “You’re just a bankrupt heiress. Don’t think rubbing elbows with a few rich folks as a doctor means you can walk around like you own the place.”

He spat, “Even if you hustled for three lifetimes, you’d still be way out of Ian’s league.”

Chloe shot up from her seat, fed up and unwilling to waste another second on this grumpy old geezer.

She glared at Edward, face icy. “Don’t worry, Mr. Hamilton. Even if every man on the planet suddenly vanished, I still wouldn’t lower myself to get back together with your precious grandson. Not in a million years.”

Right before heading out, Chloe tossed one last dig his way. “Oh, and maybe you should keep your grandson. on a tighter leash. Tell him to quit showing up whining and trying to mess up my life–I’m done with his pathetic drama.”

Chloe didn’t give Edward the chance to start ranting. She turned on her heel and left without another word.

Behind her, Chloe heard the sharp crash of a teacup being hurled onto the table, but she couldn’t care less

and never looked back.

Chloe marched back to the clinic, ready to see her next round of patients.

Chapter 231

Margaret’s mother, Lucille Goodwin, knocked on the door and stepped into Chloe’s office.

Chloe looked up and saw a young woman dripping in sparkling jewels and dressed in flashy luxury. Then she glanced at the patient’s name on her computer–Lucille Goodwin. ‘She looks way younger than I’d expected… Is this really the person I’m supposed to meet?‘ Chloe wondered.

Chloe asked, just to confirm, “Are you Lucille Goodwin?”

Lucille glanced around the office, gave Chloe a once–over, and then sat down.

Chloe asked, “How long have you been having trouble sleeping? Have you taken any medication for it?”

Lucille smirked, “I’m not here for treatment–I came to warn you.”

Chloe slowly pulled her hand back from the keyboard.

She met Lucille’s gaze and could see the challenge and contempt in her eyes, clear as day.

But Chloe didn’t recognize Lucille at all. For a moment, she was confused and kept her guard up.

Chloe said, “Just say what you mean.”

Lucille casually toyed with the jade bracelet on her wrist, making sure Chloe saw every glimmer.

Fixing Chloe with a cold, warning glare, she said, “Dr. Irvine, whether you and Mr. Hamilton grew up together or were married for years, that’s all in the past now. I suggest you mind your place and stop fantasizing about winning him back with that pretty face of yours.”

Lucille’s voice was cutting, dripping with spite. Chloe couldn’t help but frown, thinking, ‘Is she for real? Does she think I’m dying to chase after Ian again?‘

Lucille kept her eyes locked on Chloe, voice full of threat. “Even if you can’t let go, my daughter Margaret is about to get engaged to Mr. Hamilton. If you so much as try to mess up their engagement, you’ll have me to

answer to.”

Chloe curled her lips into a mocking smirk.

‘So this is Margaret’s mother, Mrs. Goodwin,‘ Chloe thought.

‘Looks like I’ve just crashed right into a viper’s nest–one after another, they’re all showing up to warn me,‘ she sneered to herself.

Chloe stood up from her chair.

Eric nodded. “Yeah, Mr. Henry Quinn got married in Riverton because his wife was pregnant. Now he’s throwing a party back home to introduce her to everyone.”

‘Shotgun wedding for Henry? Seriously?‘ Chloe thought, raising an eyebrow in surprise.

Chloe remembered right, Henry had to be around fifty.

Eric noticed Chloe’s face all scrunched up in confusion, so he reached over and gave her forehead a quick flick.

Chloe jerked her head back, shooting Eric a look. “Eric, is it exactly what I’m thinking?”

Eric chuckled and nodded. “You guessed it. Mr. Henry Quinn is hell–bent on having a son–this is already his third wife. I heard his new wife’s pregnant and it’s definitely a boy. Mr. Quinn’s so over the moon, he’s practically treating her like a goddess.”

Chloe couldn’t help but shake her head.

‘Must be nice when your wallet can solve anything,‘ she thought.

‘Even some fifty–year–old fossil has women fighting to have his son. Money really can buy anything,‘ she scoffed to herself.

All day long, Chloe had Edward and Lucille breathing down her neck, and her mood was in the gutter.

She clocked out early and headed straight home.

She helped her mom whip up dinner, pitched in with her dad’s gardening, and hung out with her brother, swapping stories and jokes. By bedtime, she was feeling good as new again.

It was barely nine o’clock when Chloe was sprawled out on her bed, caught up in a heated round of Fight the Landlord on her phone with Arthur and Simon. Right in the middle of her game, a message from Ian popped

  1. up.

Ian: [I’m outside your place. Need to talk.]

Chloe pouted, but no way was she quitting before her hand was done. She played out her cards before finally putting down her phone.

After hesitating a moment, Chloe pulled out her phone and dialed

up Edward.

As soon as he answered, Chloe cut right to the chase. “Hey Edward, did you forget to keep your mutt on a leash? That troublemaker grandson of yours is out here sniffing around my front door again.”
