Chapter 250

lan sat at his desk, glanced up at Margaret, and his face instantly darkened.

Margaret watched lan busily working at his own pace, never bothering to stand or even look her way. Amused, a subtle smile played at her lips.

She set her files down, casually leaned forward with both hands on the edge of his desk, her tone relaxed. I came to hand over a project to Mr. Stone, and thought I’d drop by to see you,”

fan put down his papers and looked up at her. “Just say what you want.”

Margaret walked around the office and came over to stand next to him.

She rested one hand on the edge of his desk, watching him closely. “I went to the hospital to get medicine for my grandmother today, but for whatever reason, Mr. Garrison just randomly stopped me out of nowhere.”

lan glanced downward, masking his expression, and asked, “Did Mr. Garrison tell you why he did it?”

Margaret smiled.

She looked around lan’s office, her tone playful yet probing. “Mr. Hamilton, if you’re truly considering remarrying your ex–wife, I could act as your mediator.”

Ian slowly stood up, his face growing colder by the second.

He shot Margaret a warning look. “Miss Goodwin, you’re overstepping.”

Margaret shrugged. “Sorry, I was just saying.”

lan said, “Margaret, we’ve worked together for years, you know me. I said I’m never getting married again, and I’m not changing my mind. Ever.”

In just a couple of minutes, the mood between them had shifted, tightening unexpectedly.

Margaret let out a soft sigh and shifted the conversation. “Don’t take it the wrong way, Mr. Hamilton. I guess I was meddling a bit earlier. Your mother actually chatted with me about how you’ve been, and asked me to drop by and check up on you.”

lan’s eyes narrowed, a thoughtful glimmer flashing across his gaze.

Margaret kept her cool, carefully observing lan’s face before smoothly shifting gears. “Your ex–wife is seriously gorgeous, and she’s hardworking and determined. If I were a guy, I’d probably have a crush on her

too.

She went on. “You know, family always comes before love, and since she’s chosen to move on, maybe it’s time you thought about your family’s feelings too, Mr. Hamilton. And respect her choice.”

Annoyance crept into lan’s voice as he interrupted, “Are you even listening to me?”

Margaret said sincerely. “I get what you’re saying, Mr. Hamilton. But I still want to give you a piece of honest. advice–from the heart. If you truly love your ex–wife, don’t turn that love into a shackle for her?

A stab of pain shot through lan’s chest. He turned to his assistant at the door and ordered quietly, “Show her

out.”

Their eyes met. Margaret, keeping her tone soft, said, “Sorry,” then picked up her bag and walked towards

door.

Just as she reached the door, Margaret suddenly stopped.

She turned back to lan and said, “Mr. Hamilton, honestly, we’re a lot alike. We always put family first–and our own interests above everything else, no matter what”

Jan corrected her slowly, each word deliberate. Tm not like you.”

Margaret gave him a faint smile. “Back then, before the divorce, that’s exactly who you were. Mr. Hamilton.”

Just as she was about to leave, Margaret added, “Otherwise, you and your childhood sweetheart wouldn’t have drifted apart after more than twenty years together.”

After watching Margaret leave, lan shot a cold command at his assistant by the door, his voice low. “Close the door.”

The four assistants hurried to shut the office door, none of them daring to lift their heads.

Ian clenched his jaw against the stabbing pain in his chest, yanked open a drawer, grabbed a bottle of pills. and hurried over to the liquor cabinet. His hands trembled as he poured himself a drink, desperation clear in

every movement.

Just then, Miranda walked in carrying a thermos, catching lan as he struggled to twist open the pill bottle. obviously preparing to take his meds.

Jan turned and, without missing a beat, slipped the painkillers into his pocket, trying to act casual as if nothing had happened.

“Don’t bother hiding it, Ian. Mom saw it all,” Miranda said, her voice gentle yet full of concern.

Miranda couldn’t help but feel for him, supporting lan over to the couch so he could rest.

Miranda ladled out the herbal porridge she’d brought, making sure lan didn’t slack off and watched him eat every spoonful.

Stirring his porridge absent–mindedly, lan glanced up and asked, “Mom, did you get a chance to talk to Margaret when you came in?

Miranda stared at her son for a good while, her eyes fixed on him.

He said, “I’m not going to get engaged to her, Mom. No way!”

She said. “You took Chloe away without a word, then brought her back safe and sound. Mom knows you’ve already made your choice, whether it was your own doing or just how things played out. Now that

He forced out his words, his voice rough with grief, trying to comfort Miranda. “Mom, you really don’t have to worry about me. I just… I’m not ready to be apart from Chloe for the rest of my life. Just give me a little more time, alright?”

Seeing her son try to comfort her only made Miranda worry even more.

do

She grew serious, locking her gaze on lan. “Listen, Ian, if you really don’t want to get engaged to Margaret, I’ll

my best to smooth things over for you. But promise me–you’ll cooperate with the doctors and focus on getting healthy. That’s all I ask

She continued, “You’ve already failed Chloe in this life. You can’t let down your family too.”

Ian slumped on the couch, head bowed, barely managing a quiet, “Mm.”

Miranda looked worn out as she stood up. “Your sister was pushed to meet Michael, the third heir of the Monroe family, today–who knows how that went. I need to go check on her.”

an got up and walked her to the door. “Mom, Michael’s just not right for Mia”

Miranda rubbed her temples, clearly stressed. “Edward and your dad kept pushing, and Mia only agreed

because she was at her wit’s end. Honestly, she’s probably just doing it to app, and Mia only agreed

them.”

At six in the evening, Chloe pulled her car up outside a shopping mall in the city center.

Before she could even set foot inside, Patrick popped up out of nowhere, hooked her by the elbow with his usual swagger, and swept her straight into the fancy restaurant next door.

Chloe walked into the restaurant and instantly spotted Mia sitting inside. Her heart skipped a beat–she hadn’t expected to run into her here.

Patrick put a finger to his lips, signaling Chloe to keep quiet, then–still with that cocky confidence- practically dragged her into the booth right behind Mia, making sure they wouldn’t be noticed.
