lan walked into the living room in silence and sat down on the sofa across from Miranda and Shane.

Miranda stood up and pressed, “Was it crowded at the Clark County today? Where’s Chloe? She’s not with you?”

lan stared at the fruit bowl on the table and replied in a low, gloomy voice, “Didn’t get the license.”

Miranda’s first thought was that the two of them had gotten into a fight. She pointed at Ian and demanded, “Did you upset Chloe? What’s going on?”

lan brushed it off. “Nothing happened, just got stuck in traffic and ended up getting there late.”

lan racked his brain, but no matter how hard he thought, he still had no clue why Chloe suddenly backed out of getting the marriage license.

In his previous life, he’d owed her more than he could ever repay. Even at the very end, he’d never managed to earn her forgiveness.

‘If Chloe had come back like I did, knowing her, she would’ve just said it all straight to my face–ended things right then and there. She would never have left without saying a word,‘ Ian thought. There had to be some other reason.

Shane jabbed a finger at Ian and said harshly, “You’re the one who wanted to get married, and she’s the one you insisted on marrying.

“The new place is already set up, and the whole wedding’s been announced. Everyone knows you’ll tie the knot at the end of the month. So you two better not have any problems.”

Ian said, “I don’t want that place. After Chloe and I get married, we’ll live at Blue Cove Residences.”

Whether Chloe had gone back in time like he did or not, Ian was done with that place for good.

Andrea and her son had been in that house, and Chloe thought it was filthy. She was a total clean freak. If Chloe thought something was filthy, Ian wouldn’t go near it again, period.

Miranda pushed Jan, “Hurry up and go find Chloe, set up a new date, and get that marriage license sorted

out,”

Mia happened to walk in just then and caught what everyone was talking about.

She was gasping for breath, pointed at lan, and blurted out to Miranda and Shane, “Mom, Dad, I have no clue what lan did, but Chloe got so mad she just ran out of Clark County.”

Ian’s face turned stormy and he barked at Mia, “Stop making stuff up.”

Mia moved closer to Miranda and lowered her voice. “Patrick saw it too. When they were at the courthouse applying for the marriage license, Chloe stormed off and left lan hanging.”

Miranda stared at lan for a long moment. With a frosty glare, she demanded, “Ian, are you having second. thoughts about marrying Chloe?”

Ian looked down, shook his head, and didn’t say a word.

Shane’s tone was commanding. “You practically begged for this marriage–too late for regrets now. March yourself over to the Irvine family’s house, set a new date, and get that marriage license sorted, pronto.”

Miranda jumped in, “Just because Chloe loves you doesn’t mean you get a free pass. Get over to the Irvine family and apologize to her this instant.”

Ian stood up and gave a silent nod. Now that he’d gotten a second shot at life, Ian was hell–bent on bringing Chloe home as his bride, no matter what.

He’d keep himself pure for her, stick by her side, treasure her, protect her, and give her a love that was hers and hers only.

As Ian reached the door, he paused and glanced back at his family in the living room. This time, he’d value his own life too–no more those tragedies. He’d be there for them, take care of them, be their rock whenever they needed him.

Summer sunsets dragged on forever. When Ian showed up at Chloe’s place, it was just a little after eight, and darkness was only beginning to settle in.

Carl, rocking slippers, shorts, and a tank top with a fresh crew cut, swung the door open. Spotting Ian, his face lit up and he called out with a grin, “Yo, Ian.”

Ian’s eyes caught the medicated patch stuck to Carl’s ankle. He bent down and gave Carl’s ankle a gentle squeeze to check his ligaments.

Carl just laughed and waved him off. “I’m fine, bro. Doesn’t hurt at all.”

Ian said, “If your legs aren’t strong enough, you’ll mess up your ligaments. Don’t push it.”

While they were chatting, Jill and Frank came by, ushered Ian inside, and led him straight into the living room. Ian looked around the living room, but Chloe was nowhere in sight. Almost without thinking, he found himself standing right outside her bedroom door.

Carl knocked on the door. “Chloe, open up.”

Chloe opened the door, but the instant she saw lan standing there, her body moved before she could think- she just spun around, ready to duck back into her room.

“Chloe?” Jan quickly stepped forward and held the door, not letting her close it on him.

lan blurted out, “With me here, I won’t let anyone lay a finger on you, I promise.”

Chloe couldn’t help but scoff inwardly. Honestly? What scares me the most is you, you absolute jerk‘

Chloe made up an excuse to brush him off. “Sure, maybe my family’s broke now, but I still think I deserve at least a halfway decent proposal, right?”

Ian’s expression was more serious than she’d ever seen before. “If there’s anything I’ve done wrong, just tell

lan realized he’d been too impatient. He’d go home and get everything ready, and this time, he’d make sure to propose to her the right way.

Chloe had this nagging feeling–lan seemed strangely different tonight, not his usual self at all. He was always the distant, collected type, never showing much emotion.

Chloe bit her lip, watching lan closely for a good while. She wondered, ‘Wait, could Ian have come back in time too?

No way. Knowing him, if he really were the Ian from my previous life, he’d be acting all pathetic again, begging me for forgiveness like before.

Chloe stared right at Ian and said, “Listen, I’ve thought it through. I’ll pay you back every cent I owe, I’ll pack up and get out of your place. And this marriage? It’s over. I’m not going through with it.”

It was a little past eight. Under the glow of the streetlamp, the two just stared at each other and neither said a

word.

Ian’s eyes locked onto Chloe, intense and unwavering. He tried to take Chloe’s hand, but she subtly avoided him–lifting her own hand to fix her wind–blown hair instead, not giving him a chance to get close.

Ian’s hand, left hanging in the air, dropped to his side. A creeping fear began to spread through his whole body. He asked, “Chloe, you said you’d marry me. Why’d you change your mind all of a sudden?”

Ian’s tone was cautious, a little unsure. “Did I do something to hurt you–something you just can’t get past?”
