As soon as the car pulled away from the airport, Ian’s phone started ringing.
After he finished the call, Ian told Robert to head over to Carl’s school first.

When lan had enrolled Carl, knowing that Jill and Frank were getting older, he had put down his own personal number as Carl’s emergency contact.
Just now, the teacher had called to say that Carl had gotten into a fight at school. Since they couldn’t reach Chloe, they called Ian instead.
When Ian walked into the Dean’s Office, several school administrators who had been waiting quickly hurried over to greet him.
One of the middle–aged men stepped forward respectfully. “Mr. Hamilton, we’re sorry to have you come here yourself. It’s just that the other kid’s parents refused to let this go.”
At a school like this, every student’s family was either wealthy or powerful, and none of the staff wanted to risk offending anyone.
Ian gave a polite nod and headed straight over to Carl.
He examined Carl closely, spotting a bruise at the corner of his mouth. Ian’s face grew colder by the second. “Did you get hurt anywhere else?”
Carl knocked Ian’s hand away. “It’s none of your business.”
With that, Carl turned his back on Ian.
The school administrators stayed silent, not daring to interrupt.
One of them quickly stepped forward and explained, “Mr. Hamilton, our investigation shows that Carl had an argument with a boy during recess. We confirmed that Carl threw the first punch, but he won’t explain why and refuses to apologize to the boy.”
Ian stood there quietly, listening to the administrator’s explanation, his face a blank slate.
Then, taking a deep breath to stay calm, he walked over to Carl, placed a steady hand on his shoulder, and leaned in to look him straight in the eye. “Tell me. Did you get hurt anywhere else?”
Carl yanked his neck away, grabbed Ian’s wrist, and broke free from lan’s grip.
Mitchell nervously wiped the cold sweat from his forehead, feeling the tension in the room.
If Ian hadn’t been quick enough to block Carl’s punch, he might’ve ended up with a black eye at work
tomorrow.
Ian glanced at Mitchell, who quickly ushered the school administrators out.

Chapter 46
:
As the door closed, it was just lan and Carl in the room.
lan looked stern, and his eyes turned cold as he demanded, “Why won’t
you talk?”

Carl shot lan a fierce glare and tried to storm off, but Ian grabbed his shoulder to stop him.
Carl’s eyes were red with anger as he tried to fight back on the spot. Ian blocked his moves, countered each. one, and after a few quick exchanges, he had Carl restrained and sitting in a chair.
Ian’s voice was as cold as ice as he snapped, “I had you learn taekwondo so you could protect yourself, not to go picking fights.”
Carl kept struggling, defiant and mad. “Let go! I want to go one–on–one with you!”
lan’s temple throbbed. “I’m your brother–in–law, so show some respect when you talk to me!”
Carl’s eyes blazed red with fury. “You had a kid with another woman and shattered Chloe. You’re not my brother–in–law.”
Ian’s
eyes
flickered, dimming for a moment. He let go of Carl, his emotions tightly controlled.
Carl leaped to his feet, stretching his arms and legs, looking like he was about to go all out against Ian.
Ian cleared his throat and softened his tone. “Carl, whatever is going on between Chloe and me is our business. As long as Chloe hasn’t divorced me yet, I’m still your brother–in–law and I’ve got every right to step in for you.”
He paused and pressed, “So, what made you get into a fight at school?”
Carl wasn’t buying it. “Chloe doesn’t want you anymore. You’re not my brother–in–law, so you don’t get to boss me around.”
Ian locked eyes with Carl, silent for a long while.
Neither of them looked away, just staring each other down. The whole room felt frozen.
After a long, tense moment, Ian finally spoke, “Let’s settle this at home. Chloe can tell you herself if I’m your brother–in–law or not.”
“Don’t expect me to ever talk to you again in this life!” Carl yelled angrily.
He grabbed the gift he’d gotten for Chloe and stepped out of the car.
Heading up to the house, lan saw warm light pouring out from the open living room door, and his face
softened.
Chloe probably already had dinner waiting for him.
She always had such good taste. He was excited to see how the place looked now.
Ian took the suitcase from Mitchell. “You guys head home and get some rest. I got it from here.”
He walked into the living room and put the suitcase down.

Standing in the entryway, lan couldn’t help but frown. The shoe cabinet door was worn, with antique bronze handles. The stylish glass–marble wall had been replaced by an arched wooden door with intricate carvings
He remembered Chloe loved minimalist luxury,
He couldn’t understand why she’d redecorate the house in cream style, which they both hated.
lan realized that she was still mad at him. She went to great lengths with this remodel just to annoy him.
lan looked down at a pair of matching couple’s slippers on the floor. The men’s pair were neatly placed by the entryway. As he looked at them, the tight knot in his brow slowly cased.
He thought to himself, ‘Whatever. As long as she’s willing to come home, I’ll let her do things her way!
He glanced at the gift he’d picked out for Chloe and changed into the slippers.
Right then, Andrea sauntered in behind Ian, her silky nightgown clinging to every curve. Clint was tagging along at her side. She greeted lan with a sweet, practiced smile, “Ian, you’re finally back.”
Startled by her voice, lan whipped around.
Clint, beaming with joy, rushed over and clung to Ian’s leg, shouting, “Dad…”
