Chloe’s eyes were red, her lower lip pressed tightly between her teeth

Seeing Chloe slowly calm down, lan leaned forward and gently wrapped his arms around her. Then he took a key from his pocket and placed it in her hand.

Ian said, “This is the key to the house in the city. Let your parents move back in!

Chloe pulled away from fan’s arms and took a step back.

She set the key aside, her voice firm. “My parents have a place to stay. If you truly care about them, then give the jewelry back to my family”

Ian met Chloe’s gaze. “You’re Mrs. Hamilton now. Letting your parents go on living in those relocation apartments just doesn’t fit.”

Chloe turned her face away. “Tan, it’s just us here. You don’t have to pretend.”

Jan’s eyes grew cold and intense as he stared at Chloe.

He shoved the key into Chloe’s hand again, his grip locking her fingers around it. ‘Chloe, this isn’t a negotiation. If you still want that jewelry, you’d better do as I say.”

His tone carried an unmistakable warning.

Chloe bit back her anger, squeezing the key so hard it hurt. “You’re always so good at convincing people–why don’t you go do it yourself?”

Jan shrugged, “No real reason. You’re simply the best person for this.”

Chloe felt like all the strength had been sucked right out of her–her legs turned to jelly, barely able to prop herself up.

She stumbled backward, only steadying herself by clutching onto the edge of the cabinet.

Ian wanted her to take the key and be the one to talk her parents into moving back into the Hamilton place.

All he really wanted was for her parents to believe she was staying in this marriage by choice, that she had no intention of leaving.

He was using her as a pawn in his game to win over her parents‘ hearts.

He was also using her–her attitude–to put her parents in their place.

Chloe just stood there, stunned, lost in her own thoughts for a good while.

She finally turned to Ian, her tone icy. “If you’re so afraid my parents will make you lose face, then hire them a maid, get them a private driver, and set it up so my brother can attend day school.”

As long as they didn’t get divorced, she’d have her claws in half of Ian’s wealth just by sticking around.

He could spoil his favorite woman and his son however he wanted, without a care in the world.

And she could spend his money recklessly, and there’d be nothing he could do about it.

If they were doomed from the start, then why not tear each other apart until there’s nothing left.

Ian answered with a faint smile, “We’re husband and wife now–what’s yours is mine, and looking after your parents is the least I can do.”

Ian walked up to Chloe, his hand almost touching her waist. “Tomorrow night, there’s a private jewelry event -I’ll introduce you to someone.”

He made it sound like a suggestion, but his tone left no room for objections.

Chloe just pulled at the corner of her mouth, staying silent.

To Ian, Chloe was just a pawn–whenever he needed to keep up appearances, she’d be dragged along, like it or

not.

The next night, Chloe made a striking entrance in a midnight blue gown dotted with sparkling stars, her arm hooked around Jan’s as they stepped into the room together.

Jan was decked out in a sleek black suit; with his impressive height, chiseled looks, and the aura of the undisputed Hamilton heir, he became the instant focal point the moment he walked in.

Yvonne just gave a cruel little smile, then tipped her wine glass, letting the red liquid trickle down over the woman’s head. “You’re nothing but yesterday’s leftovers to my husband. I could dump you in the garbage anytime I wanted. You’re not even qualified to come at me.”

The young woman, drenched in wine, didn’t dare make a scene–she just bolted, looking like a total mess.

Chloe blurted out, “You’re really not upset by that?”

Yvonne took the napkin from the waitress and wiped her hands with deliberate elegance.

She shot Chloe a slightly apologetic glance. “I used to get worked up about these things–but not anymore.”

Yvonne said, “Feelings are the easiest things to sour in this world. The moment you start caring too much, that’s when you lose.”

Chloe found herself nodding in silent agreement.

After chatting a while, Chloe realized Yvonne’s story mirrored her own–they really weren’t so different after all.

It was all business–her marriage was nothing but a deal, while her husband was off sleeping around, getting his side chick pregnant and having a son and a daughter with her. And that was just for starters; he had a whole parade of women on the side.

Divorce wasn’t even an option for Yvonne. For the sake of her family’s standing, she had to swallow her pride again and again, always picking up after her husband’s messes–doing everything she could to make sure everything looked perfect on the outside.

After Yvonne walked away, Chloe found herself retreating to a solitary corner, lost in thought and zoning out, just wanting to disappear for a moment from all the noise around her.

Ian had orchestrated everything–bringing Chloe here, introducing her to Yvonne–all of it was deliberate.

He wanted to crush her spirit, wear down her fire, and shape her into another Yvonne–one more woman who’d been trained to obey and keep up appearances.

Ian walked over and reached out to fix the tiara on Chloe’s head, his tone smooth as ever: “So, how’d the chat go?”

Chloe dropped her gaze, avoiding his eyes. “It was alright,” she said, barely bothering to sound interested.

Ian slipped his arm around Chloe’s waist like they were the only two people in the room.

He said, “You always get something out of talking with people who really get you. Next time, I’ll introduce you to a few more ladies from our circle.”
