Chapter 95

Chloe slept in until ten the next morning.

Remembering her promise to Arthur Logan last night, Chloe hopped out of bed and freshened up.

After changing, she walked out to the living room, only to find that the little fuzzballs she’d brought back last night had disappeared.

Just then, lan came out of the study.

Chloe asked, “Where are the stuffed animals I brought back last night?”

Ian replied, “Those toys are a breeding ground for germs. I took care of them for you.”

Chloe’s temper flared. “Who gave you the right to throw away my stuff?”

Ian stayed calm. “This is my house. I get to decide what stays and what goes.”

Chloe fell silent.

‘His words were harsh, but he was right,‘ Chloe thought to herself.

‘In this house, I’m just his convenient shield, something he can get rid of whenever he wants–let alone anything else,‘ Chloe couldn’t help but mock herself inwardly.

Seeing Chloe fall silent, Ian walked over to her.

He kept his voice as steady as possible. “As your husband, I have a responsibility to you. Let me say this again -Arthur Logan is seriously unpredictable. You really should keep your distance from him.”

Just as Ian finished speaking, Chloe’s phone started to ring.

She glanced at Ian and corrected him, “Even if Mr. Logan is unpredictable, he’s my patient–and he pays my

bills.”

With that, Chloe turned away and answered the call.

Jan’s expression went cold the moment he overheard Chloe setting up a meeting time and place with Arthur Logan on the phone.

Not long after, Chloe grabbed her purse, looking like she was about to head out.

Ian reminded her, his tone flat, “Aren’t you forgetting there’s something you haven’t done?”

Without a trace of warmth, Chloe tipped up and brushed her lips against lan’s–a perfunctory gesture, nothing more.

Ian’s face darkened, his tone sharpening. “Chloe, you forgot to apply my medication last night.”

Chloe smacked her forehead.

:.

How could I forget about Ian’s injury? she thought, feeling a pang of guilt.

She set her bag down and pulled lan into the bedroom.

She grabbed the first–aid kit and took the initiative to undo lan’s white shirt.

Chloe carefully applied the medication, while lan sat on the edge of the bed, brooding in silence.

When she finished, Chloe helped Ian slip his shirt back on with practiced ease, slung her bag over her shoulder, and headed out.

Ian sat on the edge of the bed, glancing down at the white shirt Chloe had just helped him into–every single

button left undone.

He shot a look at the open first–aid kit on the nightstand, his face darkening as he got up and started tidying everything away, one item at a time.

His phone buzzed beside him. With clear irritation, Ian picked it up.

It was his father, calling to tell him to bring Chloe along and come home to The Old Hamilton Manor for lunch.

Ian got up and headed into the walk–in closet.

At noon, he showed up at The Old Hamilton Manor by himself.

Miranda asked, “Ian, where’s Chloe? Why didn’t she come with you?”

Ian replied coolly, “She got called in for an emergency. She can’t make it right now.”

This time, Shane couldn’t help but praise Chloe. “Gotta admit, that girl’s got some real skills. I saw the press conference video–she had everything under control. Figures, with her background.”

Then he turned to Jan. “Ian, after all this, you should know–whether it’s people or business, you gotta know your priorities.”

Ian didn’t say anything, just nodded with an expressionless face.

Edward spoke up, reminding lan, “The Grand Horizon Group’s annual party is on the second day of the New Year. Last time, Mrs. Logan invited Chloe herself, but she didn’t show. Make sure she comes with you this

time.”

He asked, “Isn’t Andrea supposed to have depression? You just hung up on her–aren’t you worried she’ll go off the rails and start freaking out at people?”

Jan couldn’t help but frown.

He said, “Patrick, don’t talk about Andrea like that. Clint just lost his backpack, she was only calling to ask me about it.”

Patrick shot back, “Why do you even care if her kid lost his backpack?”

Ian rubbed his temples, exasperated. “Andrea’s doing nonstop livestreams today. I had to pick Clint up for

her.”

Patrick stared at lan for a long moment, eyebrows raised in pure disbelief, like he couldn’t decide if he should

Patrick gave him a dramatic thumbs–up. “Wow, look at you–the mighty CEO of the Hamilton Group. Not spending time with your parents, not with your wife, but jumping at the chance to play free Uber driver for your First Love and discount dad for her kid. Man, you really are something else.”

Jan’s face was so dark it was almost scary. “You all just have it out for Andrea. She wouldn’t ask for my help unless she absolutely had no other choice”

Patrick got up, suddenly serious. “Look, for the sake of how long, we’ve known each other, I’ll only say this once more–lan, if you keep being this stubborn, you and Chloe are headed for trouble. It’s only a matter of

time

Patrick continued, “Just think about how Chloe was before she married you–bright, confident, full of life. She was bold, laughed easily, played hard. Now look at her.”

He added, “If you really want to make things right, be honest with her–and stay far away from Andrea and her kid. Stop putting her through this”

Patrick finished, “If you actually want a real future with her, give her the respect she deserves, give her what she wants. Stop forcing her to go along with whatever you want just so you can get your own way.”

When lan got home, Patrick’s words kept echoing in his mind.

Chloe coming home late just to give him attitude really only meant one thing–she still loved him, still cared deep down.

He went into the walk–in closet, opened the locked safe, and took out the set of emerald jewelry.

He lit a cigarette and sat quietly on the couch, waiting for Chloe to come home.

They were husband and wife. As her husband, it wouldn’t kill him to back down and swallow his pride every once in a while.
