As soon as he finished speaking, he shook his head and gave a quiet, self-deprecating laugh.
A junior assistant walked in, arms full of contracts. "Gideon, these are all documents that need Mr. Nicholson's personal signature. Where is he?"
"He stepped out. Just leave them on his desk," Gideon replied, already heading out of Julian's office.
The assistant stacked the contracts on Julian's desk, unknowingly burying an unopened court summons beneath the pile.
Julian headed downstairs and got into the car. The driver sped off toward home, but even at this pace, it would take nearly forty minutes to get there.
Meanwhile, Tiana was still causing quite a commotion.
For a child who desperately wanted her mother, with her father unable to come home right away, and not particularly fond of her grandmother's care, she pinned all her hopes on her favorite person in the world: Miss Felly.
As soon as she hung up on her dad, Tiana used her smartwatch to call Felicity.
Felicity answered almost immediately, her voice as gentle as ever. "Princess Tiana, have you missed Miss Felly these past few days? I've missed you so much I can hardly eat!"
The moment Tiana heard that Felicity missed her, she burst into loud, hiccupping sobs. "Miss Felly, there's no one here to keep me company. None of you want to be with me. I miss you so much, Miss Felly, so, so much. Can you please come over right now and stay with me…"
Felicity fell silent for a moment.
That morning, she'd gone out to the countryside with Frank, Clayton, and Julian to inspect a promising piece of land—lush hills, a clear stream, the works. After confirming they wanted to purchase it, they'd had lunch together, and Felicity had headed back to the Shepherd estate in the afternoon.
Grandpa had called her home.
But because of Julian, she needed Tiana to like her—she needed to be the new mom Tiana wanted.
"Miss Felly, Daddy won't be home for another hour. Can you come over and stay with me until he gets back? Then you can go back to your work, okay?" The little girl, still recovering from illness, just wanted a bit more pampering.
The moment Felicity heard Julian would be home soon, she said quickly, "Of course—Miss Felly will be right over."
Meanwhile, Julian was already racing home as fast as he could.
The moment he walked through the door, he saw Janetta sitting on the sofa, her face thunderous with anger.
She sprang to her feet as soon as she saw him. "Julian! I don't care how much we have to pay Winona, even if it's ten thousand dollars a month for a housekeeper! You have to bring her back to take care of my granddaughter!"
