He paid a portion of Teague's medical bills and tried to find Henrietta, Jason, and the old couple, but they were nowhere to be found. Where had the four of them gone?
Back at the hospital, the director wanted a word with Xander.
"Dr. McCarthy, I know your families have been acquainted for decades, but in this situation, the Shepherds don't deserve any sympathy. Old Mrs. Shepherd schemed against her husband's first wife while she was pregnant, rendering her permanently infertile. And Mrs. Shepherd, Henrietta, is even more twisted, abusing a five-year-old child like that. As for Felicity, with over a dozen people injured, she could be sentenced to life in prison if any of them die. So…"
"I understand, sir. I won't provide them with any more help."
"You need to weigh your decisions carefully."
"Understood."
After the director left, Xander fell into deep thought. Even without the warning, he hadn't planned to help the Shepherds any further. Besides, he couldn't find them anyway. He imagined they were probably hiding under some bridge somewhere, too scared to show their faces.
The Shepherds weren't hiding under a bridge. They were in an abandoned, dilapidated building with no water, no electricity, no blankets, and no food. Old Mr. and Mrs. Shepherd were so hungry they had rummaged through every nearby trash can.
Meanwhile, Janetta had taken Henrietta to her home and stuck her with needles for a full day and night. Henrietta screamed and cried, and with every cry, Janetta cursed her. "You're a grown woman, and you scream when I torment you. My granddaughter is only five, and you wouldn't even let her cry when you hurt her! You made her smile and call you grandma! Is there a more heartless woman in the world? I can't let you die. I have to make you suffer while you're alive!"
The next day, Janetta had her men discreetly dump Henrietta at a garbage site with few surveillance cameras, leaving her to her fate. Luckily, they left her with a phone. Henrietta called her son, who picked her up and brought her, her grandparents, and Felicity's two children to the abandoned building.
The family was penniless. Henrietta's ribs were broken, and every step was agony. Her body was a mass of needle pricks from Janetta's torture, and she could only lie on the cold brick and rubble in excruciating pain. She wasn't that old, though, and despite the pain, her mind was clear.

"With twins, you usually deliver around thirty-six weeks. So, about a month left," Felicity said.
"That's good. There's still time," Jason replied.
"Time for what?" Felicity asked him.
"After you give birth, you need to get tested to be a match for Dad. He needs a bone marrow transplant."
"No… I won't do it! I'm not a real child of the Shepherd family anyway!" Felicity blurted out instantly.
