The Billionaire Ex-Wife and the Beggar He Became novel Chapter 166

Mackenzie couldn't make sense of what Yves Prescott was getting at.

All he could hear was the icy threat in Yves's voice—cold, with a hint of danger.

He'd always been a little wary of Yves, so he stammered, "She doesn't have the guts to cross me!"

"If Winona never wronged you, then why would you, a grown man, go after her so viciously? If she fought back, wouldn't that be self-defense, Mr. Chamberlain?"

Mackenzie was at a loss for words.

"So, take care of your own wounds. You started this mess—and if you try to stir up any more trouble, don't blame me for being merciless. Mr. Chamberlain, I tend to go easy on women, because I'm a man, and I have a soft spot for beauty. But when it comes to men, I never hold back." Yves said all this with a smile and an easy tone, but everyone could hear the steel edge in his words.

Mackenzie had a certain reputation in Greenwood City, so he straightened up and met Yves's gaze. "Mr. Prescott, have I wronged you?"

"You wronged my woman," Yves shot back without hesitation.

Then he looked around at everyone. "You all think Felicity's in the right and rush to her side without bothering to find out what's really going on. But not me. As far as I'm concerned, Winona is the one who deserves to be defended. If any of you come after her again, you'll find me standing against Felicity. I mean what I say."

The room fell silent.

Finally, Yves's eyes settled on Claud and Mayo. His smile turned mocking as he said something only he and Mayo truly understood, "Mr. Gallagher, Mr. Johnston—everyone else siding against Winona I can understand. But you two? Now that's a real joke."

Mayo and Claud were both left speechless, but Mayo especially looked mortified, his face flushing red, then turning pale.

With that, Yves turned and walked away, heading straight for his Rolls-Royce. He pulled open the door, got in, and soon the car pulled away from the curb.

The rest of them just stood there, exchanging awkward glances.

Over an hour later, Mackenzie finally emerged, his wounds bandaged. The doctor followed, addressing Xander, "All superficial injuries—nothing major. Just avoid any strenuous activity for now, and be extra careful with the cut on your palm; it's a bit deeper. The rest are minor."

Xander finally relaxed.

After thanking the doctor, he escorted Mackenzie and Hattie back to his car. Before saying goodbye to Claud and Mayo, Xander hesitated, then pulled them aside.

His expression was serious as he turned to Mayo. "I can't shake the feeling there's something going on between Winona, Julian, and Felly. Today, Winona said Julian was her husband. What's that supposed to mean? There's no way Julian is married to her… That woman—what kind of shameless act is she pulling?"

"Winona really is Julian's wife," Mayo replied, giving a self-deprecating laugh.

Xander was stunned. "You… what did you just say?"
