The company lawyer on the other end of the line sounded genuinely surprised.
After a brief, stunned silence, he asked Julian, "Mr. Nicholson, are you saying you want to leave part of your estate… to that woman?"
In his mind, Winona had never truly been Mrs. Nicholson. To him, she was always just that woman.
"She is my wife," Julian snapped coldly, his tone brooking no argument.
The lawyer's heart skipped a beat. "I—I see…"
He hesitated before asking, "So… how would you like to amend the will? How do you want your assets divided?"
"We'll discuss it when I get back," Julian replied curtly.
"Yes, of course, Mr. Nicholson."
As the call ended, the lawyer's mind was in turmoil.
Should he tell Miss Felicity Shepherd about this? If he did, he'd practically be betraying his boss, Julian Nicholson. But if he stayed silent, he'd be betraying Felicity—a friend, and someone whose dedication, love for Julian, and contributions to The Nicholson Group were widely acknowledged.
Why should Miss Shepherd lose out to that woman when it came to Julian's estate?
He was still debating whether or not to call Felicity when, unexpectedly, her name flashed on his phone.
He picked up immediately. "Miss Shepherd, hello."
Felicity's voice trembled, barely hiding her anxiety. "Julian just called you, didn't he? Did he revoke the divorce agreement with Winona? He doesn't want to divorce her anymore, is that it?"
The lawyer's heart ached for her. He answered quickly, "No, not exactly. Mr. Nicholson just—"
"Just what? Tell me!" Felicity demanded, her impatience palpable.
"Mr. Nicholson asked me to redraft the asset division. The previous agreement had excluded her entirely, but now, Mr. Nicholson wants to allocate part of his estate to her."
Felicity composed herself and stepped out of the restroom.
She walked straight into Zachary and Winona.
With Yves Prescott absent and Julian gone, Winona had no one to back her up. Here, on Felicity's turf, she barely registered as a threat.
Felicity glanced at Winona with cool indifference, then looked past her as if she were invisible, focusing on the man behind her. "Mr. Foster, what brings you to the site today?"
Clayton Foster greeted Felicity like an old friend. He, too, shot Winona a fleeting glance before turning his attention fully to Felicity, a sly, sardonic smile on his lips. "Some people, Felicity, really know how to jump at an opportunity."
Felicity caught the undertone in his words. "What do you mean?"
He drew her aside, lowering his voice. "I'm sorry, Miss Shepherd. I'd meant to give you a little payback on your behalf, but in the end, it looks like she's the one who came out on top."
Felicity blinked in confusion. "What are you talking about?"
