Mia glanced up at Winona, torn between speaking and holding her tongue.
Grandma and Zane sat in silence.
Clearly, they'd been well-trained by Mia.
"What happened this time? Out with it! Did the three of you get into trouble again? And you, Mia—if you stir up trouble one more time, I swear I'll wring your neck!" Winona's glare landed squarely on Mia.
If trouble broke out, Mia was always the ringleader.
Unable to withstand Winona's interrogation, Mia sighed. "It's your sister-in-law—she's been calling me nonstop all afternoon."
Sister-in-law?
Only then did Winona recall that Shera had called Felicity earlier, demanding she go to the hospital to donate blood for Victor. In response, Winona had smashed Felicity's phone to bits.
Julian couldn't get through to Felicity, couldn't find her, so of course he'd end up pestering Mia.
"Sorry, Mia…" Winona offered, sheepishly.
Mia, however, kept a straight face. "What now? I swear, that woman's lost her mind. What if she shows up at our house? You should go hide, or maybe tell Yves Prescott?"
"It's fine," Winona said, trying to reassure Mia.
She picked up Mia's phone and dialed Julian's number.
She'd blocked him, but still remembered his number by heart.
Julian answered almost instantly. "Hello? Who's this?"
"Mr. Nicholson," Winona said, her tone stiff and formal.
He hadn't gone to the office that day, hadn't been home, hadn't visited any job sites—he'd spent the entire morning frantically trying to arrange blood for his nephew, because Victor's rare blood type was running dangerously low. He'd finally managed to secure a supply, and right then Winona had called.
This time, it hadn't even occurred to him to ask Winona for her blood.
Not because he knew she'd refuse.
But because lately, he and Tiana Nicholson had been doing some soul-searching.
Especially with Victor, Julian realized Winona had no obligation to help—not when their whole family had always treated her with indifference. Why should she risk her life for them?
Even if Victor couldn't be saved this time, Julian had no intention of bothering Winona anymore. Deep down, he knew that with Winona's emotional state on the verge of collapse, calling her would only invite humiliation.
"Winona," Julian said quietly, "I've been wondering why you've been so upset lately. You weren't like this before. Gallagher told me about it—how he, Mayo Johnston, Xander, and Mackenzie Hattie Warren all teamed up to back you into a corner and finally pushed you over the edge."
